I loved the old SNES Final Fantasy games. In many ways, they set the standard of what the system could do visually, fun though grindish gameplay and the tone for what is now considered “standard” trope usage for storytelling. Back then, it felt fresh and unique. And it was because new ground was being covered and created. So fast forward from the early 1990s to today and Square-Enix has released Final Fantasy Dimensions on the Google Play Store and iTunes. Is a game that is a throwback to yesteryear worth either a $20 or $40 admission fee? The short answer is “no.” The long answer is “it’s complicated.”
