Genre: shooter
Setting: WWII
The Medal of Honor series has had a long history - dating almost seemingly back to World War II - where it is set. Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault is the first foray on the PC into the Pacific campaign of WWII.

After trying out the demo, I was left wanting more. Normally, this is what you want to do with a demo, but this time around I wanted more simply because there wasn't really anything on display, and certainly nothing that would set this title apart from the rest of the crowd.

The level was very short and while some of the new features such as a medic in your squad and squad orders sound like they may be worth while additions, the demo did not show them off. The level is essentially a free-for-all. The gameplay of the demo level was extremely scripted and linear, offering no spontaneity and surprise - or replay value - to the game.

Advance, shoot everything, advance, shoot, rinse, repeat. I had my curiosity piqued when the mission ends at an air-field with the pilots scrambling for the planes - unfortunately, you're not a pilot. You get to run to the stationary gun and shoot at the Japanese planes flying overhead. This sort of action has been done very frequently in recent years in the first person shooter genre and is starting to become somewhat tired.

I feel that this game has potential, but the extremely linear feel of the extremely short demo has me questioning its viability. With the World War II shooter genre getting more crowded by the day, it remains to be seen if this one will emerge victorious, or end up a casualty of war.

I've been playing games ever since I was a wee lad. My favorite games as a child were the classic Pitfall and a game called SNAFU, which was a sort of puzzle game along the lines of Tron Light Cycles. I've had most of the major console systems since the early days and have a wide range of tastes of games and I'm always eager to give a new one a try.
