War Front: Turning Point

Developer: Digital Reality

Release Date: 2/17/2007

ESRB: T

Genre: strategy
Setting: alternate

CDV and Digital Reality have teamed together to take a new spin on the World War 2 RTS with their new War Front: Turning Point game, combining an exciting alternate reality storyline and heroes with stimulating new weapons that will help you help the allies win the day or watch the world descend in to chaos. The game takes place in the closing days of World War 2 as the allies are moving in to Germany from the East and West; the game starts as expected but soon, with the assassination of Hitler, takes a sudden turn for the worse. Germany and the Western Allies are forced to unite as an even greater threat emerges from the East. The Great Bear has risen and old enemies must unite as the world descends in to a new world war.

With two single player campaigns the game's story is woven though cut scenes and game play elements and told though the words of several talented Hollywood script writers. The game combines traditional resource gathering, building bases, fortifications, and units with an additional tactical combat level that allows players to take control of turrets in an FPS style or any vehicle in 3rd person the game should allow players to discover new and exciting ways to take there games.

Considering that this is an alternate reality game what would it be with out some cool new technology? Each side has access to a variety of weapons ranging from mechs, jetpack troopers, earthquake weaponry to shield generators allowing players to take control of the battlefield in ways they never before could. Besides the new weapons Digital Reality has done a great job replicating some of the most famous and beloved weapons of the Second World War, from the P-51 mustang to the T-34 tank, the weapons that changed the world are rendered in beautiful detail.

In addition players can use these features to conduct new strategies during game play. For example, when a player is in control of a bunker it will receive some amount of a bonus, though at the moment the amount hasn’t been decided but its looking like it might be around 50%. What this means is that players can get in close to an enemy base create a bunker and make a real nuisance of themselves. On top of all this the game introduces another element of play. In most RTS games the players were beholden to the environment that the developers had created. In War Front, because of units like bridge layers, players can create there own back doors across streams and gorges right in to the back of an enemies base.

In addition to the single player game modes players will find no end to the action in the multiplayer portion of the game. It allows up to ten players to take to the field both cooperatively or in an all out pitched battle to the end. From five on five battles to any combination in between, players will find hours of fun in both modes.

The graphics are astounding, some of the prettiest I have had the pleasure to see in an RTS. During our demo we were shown what is perhaps the most spectacular effect the game has to offer. With a click of the mouse players will be able to summon the awesome destructive power of the atom. From the edge of the screen players seen the first sign of what is to come with the magnificent sight of what appears to be a Northrop YB-35 Bomber that flies across the screen and drops a single object. It is at this point that players are treated with perhaps the most spectacular representation of a nuclear detonation I have seen in any game.

If that was all there was, I would be happy, but the developers didn’t stop here. They also managed to deliver one of the most impressive physics engines that I have had the opportunity to see in an RTS. Rain, wind, snow, even explosive overpressure all effect the environment. Watching the trees swaying in the wind adds a level of realism which helps immerse the player deeper in the environments then usually possible.

While many of the final details are still being worked out in its current state the game looks like it will deliver hours of fun for players. I recommend all fans of RTS games to be looking for War Front: Turning Point this September on the PC.
