Call of Duty 2: Big Red One

Developer: Treyarch
Publisher: Activision

Release Date: 11/01/2005

ESRB: T

Genre: first pers
Setting: military

Maybe you have seen the movie, The Big Red One (1980) in which ultra tough sergant played by Lee Marvin leads a young unit through the storied campaigns of WWII. In Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, you get to play a new private in the Fox Company of what was to become one of America’s most famous fighting divisions, the 1st Infantry Division, which was identified by its patch, a simple big red one.

In this solid first person shooter, you will get to take part in the various military campaigns of the European and African theaters just as the division did. You will begin by fighting in North Africa against the Vichy French, then take on the Italians and Germans in Sicily. If you aren’t combat fatigued yet, you can take part of the Normandy invasion at Omaha Beach. Finally, if you are still alive after Normandy and haven’t completely lost your nerve, you can fight through France on the push to make the Germans submit. All together, there are 13 total missions which are thankfully all combat based. Infantry units in 1944 didn’t sneak around.

You have the opportunity to engage in various forms of combat in different settings. Your unit will engage the enemy themselves while also being directed to assist other units. There are also missions that involve capturing enemy positions and fortifications. A really cool part of the game is that within these missions you get to fulfill a variety of combat roles like working the machine gun off a tank, working the side gun for a bomber, and some others that I will let you find for yourself. So basically, this isn’t just run and gun. You will get to really experience several different combat scenarios.

One thing I really thought was good about the game as there are a wide variety of weapons that you can use. Each of the weapons has different strengths and are, for the most part, historically accurate. You may be using an American made Thompson machine gun one minute and German MP44 rifle the next. Additionally, you will get to fight or interact with historical machines like the German Panzer tank and many other military combat vehicles.

The game play itself can get pretty intense at times. When you are near explosions, if you don’t die then you might be knocked off your feet. Additionally, the fighting can be fairly quick and confusing, especially in the house to house fighting. The controls are easy to pick up which makes the game very enjoyable from the start. As you progress in the missions, you will find yourself sticking to various strategies and weaponry that you find most effective.

The visuals of the game are first rate. During some of the missions, you will appreciate the work Activision did to not only give you the feel for the combat environment but also give you the scope of some of the battles. The landing at Normandy was really cool to see and great fun to play. The sounds are solid but not noteworthy in any serious way.

Overall, I would recommend this game to anyone that likes first person shooters. The combat is fun with a great mission system that is not repetitive. If you are any kind of history buff, you will really enjoy being able to play as part of this famous division. So before Lee Marvin starts chewing you out, get that foxhole dug and dig in for a great game.
