Can the Marvel Universe continue to shed the image of cheesy sequels and games that just don’t satisfy the everyday fan? With X-Men II: Rise of the Apocalypse all in the Universe is considered good…Very good. Activision follows up their successful action-RPG hit with an equally stunning display of characters, maps and action, lots of action. X-Men II plays extremely similar to its predecessor, which gave the gamer a look at what this genre of game play can do. Graphics continue to impress with well defined characters and cut-scenes that are gorgeous. The opening scene of the game will leave a gamer's jaw dropped with all its clarity and smoothness. Controls are also similar to the first game. When playing solo, switching between characters is effortless with just a click of the button. Extended special mutant powers are easy to read when the menu is brought up and once the gamer becomes immersed in the game, it plays fairly easily. In dropping in on different screens to check characters powers or jump to extra features, the scrolling through screens is fairly easy. Do take some time to read what each site does and how to use each auxiliary part effectively. Not too many new gadgets in the new game to look for, but it is hard to improve on the original.
The storyline is rather textbook good versus evil, or in this case really evil. Professor X and the X-Men are teaming up with their foes, Magneto and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. This storyline gives the gamer a chance to play both good and evil characters in the X-Men comic series. This will give any comic fan a chill as the characters are true to the original story lines. You are trying to defeat the oldest and most powerful mutant on the face of the planet, Apocalypse. He and his minions are out to destroy all of mankind, mutant and normal person alike. This gives the opportunity for the teammate and some great smashing and clobbering opportunities with your mutant buddies. There are many different maps that will take you throughout the world to finally get to Apocalypse. But the action is worth it and the more people you bring along to play, the more exciting the action will be. Though fighting through simple maps that guide you where you need to go (very similar to D & D days of old) the action is constant and the little puzzles and mini-enemies the game throws at you keep it different. This was a fun game to play and was easy for many people to pick up, no matter their skill level with an X-Box controller.
I found X-Men II equally as impressive as the first action RPG game. If you wore out the electronic grooves in your first game, time to head to the store and pick up this one. You’ll want this game for your collection because it will take some time getting through the many stages it has to offer. It is also fun to play when you have multiple guests over (or online) and you don’t want anyone sitting around. This game does not have a large learning curve to it and many people can just pick it up and start smashing the enemy. When playing alone, it was fun, but when playing with friends, it was a blast. If you are a comic book fan, this is a must game to buy. If you like action RPG games, this game should also be on your wish list. If you are looking for something different, this game will not disappoint.
