Fan of the And1 tour? How about the Mountain Dew Red Alert Tour? If you don’t know what I am talking about, then you are missing out on street basketball, which focuses more on tricks and skills than rules and refs. EA Sports Big has taken that concept and used it well with their NBA Street series. NBA Street V3 just expands on their wildly popular arcade style basketball game.

The game consists of the basic three on three full court basketball full of crazy dunks and passes that the series is known for. What makes V3 unique is that EA expanded the amount of tricks and maneuvers that the players can pull off partially depending on the player’s individual skill sets. If a guy has great handles (or can dribble well), then he will be able to do some dribbling tricks that others would not be able to pull off. Since the game has the NBA license, each team is represented with partial rosters from their actual lineups. So if you are a Shaq fan then you can play the big man himself. The game also offers up NBA legends as well which, while it isn’t complete, is enough to satisfy those hard core NBA fans.

Game modes are typical of the EA Sports template. You can play now using any team you want and selecting your opponent. There is also a very cool slam dunk contest that is great for playing against your friends. The best mode however is the custom player mode. You get to create your own player and then work to make them a street ball legend. The game offers you the opportunity to customize everything including the player’s physical appearance, clothes, shoes, tattoos, bling (yes I said bling), and other accessories. Later in this mode you can purchase additional items as you progress. Additionally, you will choose your player's attributes so you can decide whether you want your guy to be a high flyer or a three point sniper. Lastly, you choose your homecourt and the game really offers a lot of options across the country so most gamers will be a able to represent their hometown. You also pick the style of the court, which can vary from urban decay motifs to rural America. Finally, you will pick a couple teammates to play with. This can be crucial as it is important that your team wins and gets noticed. You will want to complement your skills with those around you.

The game play itself isn’t extremely difficult and you will be able to play fairly well right away but it will take some time to pick up all the various tricks and skills in order to fully develop your players. The real key is to experiment and learn how best to use the analogs and also learn to see plays for alley-oops and other sets as they develop on the court. The graphics of the game are done very well. The players are noticeably detailed and varied. The environments are excellent and really give you the street basketball feel. The sound is solid, each game is emceed by a DJ who makes commentary throughout the game similar to what you would see on the And1 Tour. The soundtrack is excellent with some notable hip hop artists like the Beastie Boys and House of Pain adding tracks.

Overall, I would recommend this game to any basketball or sports fan. If you haven’t tried the arcade style basketball game then you should definitely try this one out just for the experience. The game is fast and fun and perfect for challenging a friend so you can talk smack when you face him up and throw down a dunk over him.

I’m a married professional with a 2 year old son and a baby on the way. I’ve played game for what seems like my whole life. Intellivision, Activision, Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, etc. After college I got away from gaming but a friend at work got me into the PC gaming world and I was hooked all over again. Mostly now I just play PS2. I would say that I am an average gamer when it comes to RPG’s but when it comes to Sports games I can compete with most people. I love gaming ok. There I said it
