DragonCon Preview: Agent Disco

Agent Disco

Release Date: 09/2006

ESRB: RP

How long do you usually play a cell phone game at a time for? For most people, it’s not long, and that’s part of the appeal of Agent Disco.

The other part is its nature. It’s not just a text adventure game – almost a bit fondly reminiscent of the old days of adventure games – but it’s also episodic, and designed for 20 minute playtimes. More than that, it’s a tool that other developers will be able to use down the road in order to develop their own cell phone games.

I was lucky enough to have a few minutes to sit down and talk to Omar Abdelwahed, the developer of Agent Disco, when I was at DragonCon. He’s been a game developer his entire life, and built Agent Disco in his spare time around his “day job”. Now that he’s developed the tool to let him tell the Agent Disco story, he plans on releasing it for other developers to use to tell their stories.

It’s a completely independent game; there’s no big studio backing it. He’s almost finished episode one, and hopes to have an additional one out about every two months. As part of the small, independent spirit, Abdelwahed is always testing out the game on new platforms (when interviewing the “big” companies in mobile gaming at E3, it was amazing just how many SKUs – or versions of the games for each model of each phone on each network – were necessary). And he hopes to get the players involved.

But what’s the game? Well, basically, you’re an agent, and you have access to Haven, a virtual room accessible from your cell phone. As you access it, you’ll talk to other people and learn facts about a mystery – what’s happened to Agent Disco?

It’s up to you to find out.
