InterviewInterview with Gary Conti, Associate Producer of Star Trek Legacy

Star Trek: Legacy

Developer: Mad Doc Software
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks

Release Date: 12/2006

ESRB: E10+

Genre: simulation
Setting: sci-fi
Gamersinfo.net: Please tell us a little about yourself and how you got involved in this project.

Gary Conti: My name is Gary Conti, Associate Producer on STL. I’d been working on some side projects here at Mad Doc when the opportunity to get the production of Legacy underway presented itself. Turned out to be great timing.

Gamersinfo.net: How were you able to get William Shatner, Patrick Stewart, Scott Bakula, Avery Brooks, and Kate Mulgrew to do voice overs for the game?

Gary Conti: We’d been pitching to them for a while, and I think that when they saw the enthusiasm and energy we were pouring into this project, they wanted to be a part of it. It certainly helped that people’s jaws tend to drop when they see the gorgeous visuals in our game. Oh, and I think we paid them too!

Gamersinfo.net: From what I have seen, this game is a RTS that spans the entire history of the Star Trek Universe. Will the missions/scenarios that you will be playing be based in any particular time period? Meaning, if you want to play a battle from the early days of Star Trek will the Star Fleet and enemy ships be of that time period?

Gary Conti: STL is actually a hybrid of RTS and squad shooter. It does in fact span the entire history of Trek, and the ships and fleet you control will be relative to the period in which you’re campaigning.

Gamersinfo.net: Will there be historical battles laid out to play from the various movies and TV shows?

Gary Conti: We’ve chosen to focus on an entirely original storyline, penned by an original Star Trek writer - DC Fontana. The missions in the single player campaign take the player on entirely new quests – often to see the origins, consequences, or results of events that occurred in television and film.

Gamersinfo.net: What sorts of missions will there be for the Single player mode?

Gary Conti: We’ve gone through the effort to present the player with a decent variety of mission types during the single player campaign. Mission objectives range from the simple (yet thrilling) assault and destroy, to escort and defend, to the always enjoyable covert ops missions.

Gamersinfo.net: On the fleet construction, how is that balanced? What guidlines will be used to build your fleets?

Gary Conti: An economic system has been implemented to balance the effectiveness of the player’s fleet. We use the currency “command points” to assign values to ship classes which in turn, dictate how powerful your ships will be. This doubles as an excellent way to balance multiplayer. In single player, command points are earned during missions, while in multiplayer they are set during the match hosting process.

Gamersinfo.net: Will you be able to select characters from the movies and TV shows to crew and command your ships?

Gary Conti: The characters from film and television are scripted into your fleet according to your current place in Trek history. We wanted to keep such appearances static in order to build a strong storyline.

Gamersinfo.net: Will you be able to take control of individual ships and control them in the combat? For instance in something like a flight simulator mode?

Gary Conti: Our core gameplay mechanic is that you will be at the helm of these big ships, while coordinating the actions of the rest of your fleet through intuitive use of a strategic map and group commands.

Gamersinfo.net: Are there any plans to expand the number of playable races for the future? Like adding the Cardasians or Tholians to the mix?

Gary Conti: There are no plans on any expansion content at this time.

Gamersinfo.net: How many single player missions will be included with the initial release?

Gary Conti: 15 missions total, 5 per era.

Gamersinfo.net: What is your favorite Star Trek Series?

Gary Conti: Tough call. For me it would have to be The Next Generation, as it was a staple in my household when I was young (that’s right, I’m just a baby). It’s what got me into Star Trek and sci-fi has a whole. A close second is the Original Series, because Shatner is a god amongst men.

Gamersinfo.net: Who is your favorite Star Trek Captain?

Gary Conti: Gotta be Kirk. The Shat is a true ass-kicker. Getting to hear his voice in our game for the first time was spine-tingling.

Gamersinfo.net: Thank you to Gary Conti for taking the time to answer our questions. Star Trek Legacy is scheduled to be released this fall to coincide with the 40th Anniversary of the Star Trek series.

I've been gaming since the days of the original TSR D&D and have grown up playing just about every PnP RPG created. Eventually with the age of computers, I started getting into RTS and military strategy games. And then came the MMORPG Asherons Call which changed my computer gaming forever. These days when i'm not gaming I'm working with the Los Padre's Council BSA and my son's Cub Pack - when not conquering the virtual world.
