So, you like dinosaurs do you? How would you like to find yourself on the receiving end of a cavalry charge where the cavalry is made up of Triceratops? Well in ParaWorld you’ll get your chance to find out.

ParaWorld has a rich back story associated with it and you will have the opportunity to delve into the truth behind the veil of the greatest scientific discovery of the 19th century as three scientists – Anthony Cole, Geologist; Stina Holmlund, Biologist; and Bela Benedek, Physicist – discover the possibility of alternate dimensions and are lured to ParaWorld by the scientist that originally discovered it years before. Our three heroes must not only survive but also discover the secrets to this alternate dimension in able to return to the Earth that they know.

ParaWorld is a full on RTS game, resource management and tech development game. The campaign mode will take you through the adventures of our three heroes as they search for a way home. It is run in a series of missions and occurs in three phases as you have an opportunity to encounter and develop each of three tribes/factions found on ParaWorld.

You start off with the norsemen (strong and fierce warriors) then move on to the dustriders (nomads who live in harmony with nature) and finally the dragon clan (fabled technological wizards). Each tribe has its own advantages and tech development trees and each has its own challenges to master to enable you to defeat your enemies.

Your enemies consist mainly of barbarians that roam the wilds of ParaWorld and have been seduced by Jarvis Babbit (the scientist that originally discovered ParaWorld). Then there is the SEAS (Society of Exact Alternative Science) which is made up of highly trained personnel that are outfitted with extremely high tech and deadly equipment.

ParaWorld is a fairly standard RTS game, as the campaign progresses you will play a number of missions. In each mission you basically start from scratch and have to not only establish your base of operations but also develop the structures, technology, research and training of your armies. You do this by mining resources; stone, wood and food, and then expending these resources to build those things you need to advance.

ParaWorld has a few things that make it interesting. One is that you have three main characters that you are responsible for. Not only do they supply a significant amount of your firepower in battles, but you need to ensure that they survive to the end of each mission as it is because of them that you are playing out each of these missions. Also, as you play each mission you will be developing tech levels, or as they are called in the game “epochs”. With the advancement of your settlements you will gain access to newer and more advanced equipment, military units and structures for the advancement of your army and civilization. So there is incentive to develop your epochs as quickly as possible.

Don’t forget that the enemy is advancing right along with you. There is a balancing act that you must play to ensure the security of your settlement so that it has the possibility to advance to create that which you need to defeat your enemy.

The graphics in ParaWorld are amazing. The ability to zoom in on the battlefield and view the characters and units up close an personal gives the game a wonderful perspective of the battlefield as well as showing off the effort put forth by the artists. The number of unique units and variations make for a spectacular visual impact when playing the game.

The diversity in the game is not only from the fact that there are three tribes that you will encounter and be able to learn about and play, but also from the volume of units and variations within each of the tribes. This gives you the opportunity to play the missions in the campaign over and over again trying out various strategies as you learn the capabilities of all the units at your command.

If your looking for an RTS that is a little bit different from the norm of tanks, guns, swords and sorcery, as well as a good fantasy adventure with dinosaurs (how often do you get to play with dinosaurs in an RTS game?) then give ParaWorld a try. You won’t be disappointed.

I've been gaming since the days of the original TSR D&D and have grown up playing just about every PnP RPG created. Eventually with the age of computers, I started getting into RTS and military strategy games. And then came the MMORPG Asherons Call which changed my computer gaming forever. These days when i'm not gaming I'm working with the Los Padre's Council BSA and my son's Cub Pack - when not conquering the virtual world.
