WarPath

Developer: Digital Extremes
Publisher: Groove Games

Release Date: 07/24/06

ESRB: T

Genre: shooter
Setting: sci-fi

This is my first dive into the world of PC games. I was looking for the X-Box version of Warpath first person shooter and the PC version ends up on my desk. I paniced at first, broke a bit of a sweat, but after playing for awhile, realized I can handle life with the mouse and keyboard. Only thing though, this game really didn’t make me want to be a permanent fixture in front of my monitor instead of my T.V.

Warpath is another attempt by Groove Games to break the mold of FPS games and become the next new “it” game. I was extremely intrigued and excited about the idea of three different storylines of the factions at battle. I thought that the weapon selection would be extremely different from the past games I have played and that I would find a new world of friends online to play and harness my skills. I believed that more multi-player games would be available as well as maps never seen before. But it was all to no avail, I was wrong in many of these cases.

Playing the single player campaign was as uneventful as a quilting contest. This is why I believe I can be a part of the PC world since the challenge was not very difficult. As you pick which army to be, you need to secure the various areas as you defeat your computer opponents. This proved to be easy, with the computer bots or enemies making simple mistakes of acting like sitting ducks like I used to do when I first started playing these games. I moved through different zones quickly and felt like I could take on an average high school player and do well. The weapons were fun, though nothing extremely new. It did remind me of playing Pariah in that the weapons upgrade as you move through the different levels, becoming more versatile to the player.

Though the levels were easy to move through, I did find them visually appealing. I had difficulty at times determining where I needed to go (which isn’t too hard for me), but found the transitions and backgrounds pleasing to the eye. The graphics moved well and there were few glitches as you moved through the game. Nothing new was given in the area of movement, though at times I was able to get some good movement in the air to avoid the enemy’s strikes. The controls were easy to handle, and I would imagine that this would bode true for even the X-box version. Sound effects were there, though nothing to blow the speakers off the table.

The game Warpath is another attempt at capitalizing on the interest of the FPS genre. I was extremely excited to play the game, only to be a little disappointed in the final product. The game is enjoyable to play and another take on how to involve futuristic enemies battling one another on different terrains with different maps to get many players involved in battle. The problem is the storyline never evolves into anything much and you can’t take stock in the characters you are playing with or fighting. The game seemed to be designed more for the multiplayer aspect in which teams of players can fight on various maps instead of investing more in a storyline with cut-screens explaining more about the different armies. The game is a good to rent if your are looking to get away from your usual shooter for awhile, but not worth the purchase. The game is a bit simple to move through and not worth the long term investment.

About the Author, (A.K.A Tomax)

I played my first video game in 1976 which was a pong game plugged into our black and white TV to keep me busy while my mom took my brothers and sisters to school. I was 4. I played games growing up in the arcade and at friend’s consistently after school, many times missing dinner. I became completely addicted during a long night stretch of Kung Fu on Nintendo. I had to get one and get one I did. I love the old school games, never forgetting my roots. Many a memory I have growing up and conquering games with friends, sacrificing sleep for the thrill of victory. I can play with anyone in Nintendo or Sega games, and yes, I was one of those Sega Hockey freaks who did very well. When game systems changed to the types you see now, I did not immediately jump on the gaming scene. The internet was more important and computer gaming was large. Now, home gaming systems have caught up and you can do all the online gaming you want. I am a big sports game fanatic, love baseball, hockey and now enjoy playing the football games. Though I played different types of shooter/strategy games, the FPS games are now of interest to me (even though my skills are no where near the typical high school gamer). It is fun to get together and play with people who are out having a good time. Though time is a bit tight these days, sacrificing sleep for playing is all part of the game. I enjoy the outdoors, but competition keeps bringing me back to games, and now that they are smarter, makes it even more challenging
