The Commandos game in the beginning was a third angle projection game. It was kind of like playing plastic army men with each man having specific animations. It was fun and very challenging. Now it is a full blown first person reality experience! It is very action intensive. At times I had to stop and take a breath, maybe even take my pulse to see if I was still alive and not dead like everyone else shortly after they encountered me. The graphics are very good even when you are face to face with an enemy and want to spit in their face, but hold your grip till they turn and then give them the what for. The story line reads like a good war novel, only I got to live it as the main characters. The commandos are a very elite and specialized team. Each commando has unique talents and a varied personality. I had to master each commando’s myriad of specialties to master the game. This feat alone is a good challenge. There are in game tutorial advice at first to keep you in the know. These are really hints for you to use during the mission to be a success. The tutorial advice was kind of annoying at times because it interrupted the game and you had to enter them out to continue. They are very helpful reminders, but do they need to stop my game play! Let me get some place where I can absorb the comments.
Your commando team is as follows:
Lieutenant William Hawkins (Sniper): This Englishman has a real sense of humor and can out shoot Davy Crocket with his antique sniper rifle. He is also very handy at throwing knives. A regular Mrs. Smith in the kitchen I would presume. Keep the sights steady and they will only hear a whisper in their ear when it is all over.
Captain Francis O’Brien (Green Beret): “Blood and Guts” O’Brien is a good nickname for this guy. He is the embodiment of the ultimate WWII killing machine. Francis (I only think his mom would call him that) can dual wield guns, which is very handy for laying down a lot of lead. Pick up that Nazi rifle and have at it. If you are good and quick there should be plenty of dead Nazis on the round leaving the place littered with their guns full of ammo.
Colonel George Brown (Spy): His last name should be “clear” since he is so stealthy. “Be Quick, Be Deadly and they will never see it coming” is his favorite line. I can’t say enough about the importance of this team member. He is not very well liked, but he is the necessary evil.
I started my campaign in France, eliminating Nazis like a deadly bacteria infecting the human race. I was outnumbered in almost every mission 100 to 1, but with intelligence and skill was able to overcome the enemy. The missions were very intense. I would save some French resistance hostages and take out an officer or two. Who just happened to be in the wrong place at the right time. Little did they know the “Strike Force” was going to be in their hood. Then I fought some fierce turf battles, which were extremely action packed and soul draining. Taking out the Nazi artillery encampment was cake. The final French mission was in a small town. I took this one very seriously. My goal was no one comes out alive, if you are a Nazi anyway. I changed my mind near the end and left one drunken soldier who couldn’t hit me with a nuclear bomb if he wanted too to tell the story. I am sure he could weave a story that would rival a best selling novel of how hundreds of French over whelmed the huge Nazi presence killing every Nazi in town, blowing up the railway, stealing ammunition by the truck load and assassinating the ranking general present, when in fact it was a single American spy. I don’t know how he will explain the hundred or so Nazi’s with the wire marks on their necks or the naked sub-officer, the officer, and the Gestapo whose uniforms I had make use of to sneak around the town. Walking around town in a Gestapo uniform makes one almost invisible. Only another Gestapo will notice you. I guess each dog has its own smell and American dogs don’t smell like Nazi ones.
Russia definitely took the starch out of my shorts. To make it through these missions took everything I had learned in the past and maybe even some past game lives. You need to experience this part first hand and get the full effect.
There is a multiplayer part to this game that plays up 16 players, but after logging in to the server it was difficult to find anyone playing. With too many people in a game someone always has a slow connection which lessens the gaming experience. I felt better playing with a friend over the internet.
I will revisit this game many times trying for that ultimate score and five star mission rating. I was able to get a few five star mission goals. I always go for perfection and I am not satisfied till I get as close as I believe I can. This game replays very easily without losing its fun. That is unless you are playing it on easy and race through it totally losing the intent of the game.
