Genre: racing
Setting: racing

I was excited to try this, my first motorcycle racing game. So to set the mood, I threw a Bush cd in and forwarded to the track “Machinehead”. I then began what has become a bit of the obsession for the week. This game is just plain cool. It is fast and challenging with little if any monotony. I am a bit of a newbie when it comes to racing in general and have become a fan of NASCAR so I thought this would be a natural progression. I loved the last NASCAR title, Total Team Control, until I played this game. I realized how monotonous it is to race on an oval track. MotoGP 3 opened me up to a whole new perspective on racing and gaming for that matter.

MotoGP 3 focuses on the Motorcycle Grand Prix racing circuit. The game offers you a nice variety of motorcycles, each with different strengths and weaknesses. It also has a large selection of tracks (or circuits as they are called in the Moto world) from around the globe. Each track is unique and has different challenges that make you adjust how you attack it and set up your lines. I was very impressed with how detailed they were even with variations in the inclines and declines on some of the circuits as they were not all flat surfaces. The game also lets you either race as yourself or choose to race as some of the sports notable riders.

As with most sports games, you have several different play modes to select from, exhibition, season, and then a challenge mode. These are all typical and there is nothing outside the ordinary. What makes this game really interesting is what the developers put into the actual riding. You main controls in the game are the x button for acceleration and then the analog to steer or lean your bike in the turns. That in itself is not earth shattering however the game also lets the rider lean forward to assist in acceleration or lean back which helps in the turns so as not to brake and lock up the bike. This is not the easiest thing to learn but after several races, most experienced gamers are likely to master the nuances just fine. In the game you can select whether you want the gear shifting to be done automatically or manually. I would strongly recommend auto shifting until you pick up the other controls to a level you feel comfortable.

The graphics of the game are done very well with very detailed cycles, riders, and environments. It was cool to see that if you went off track and into the dirt, your back tire would get dirty and then once back on the track; this dirt would slowly disappear with each tire rotation. I really appreciated Namco’s focus to this small but noticeable detail. The sound is also done well as the cycle engines are very distinct with the up and down shifting. The music they provide is very monotonous and arcade like so I turned it off and went with my Bush cd instead.

I found this game to be very enjoyable and each track offered new challenges which I thought made for a game that you can play time and time again. The fast pace of the races also helped you avoid the monotony of some racing games. I would recommend this game to anyone that likes racing and if you don’t then this might change your mind.

About the Author, Dave Tinkis (A.K.A Xamot)

I’m a married professional with a 2 year old son and a baby on the way. I’ve played game for what seems like my whole life. Intellivision, Activision, Nintendo, Sega, Playstation, etc. After college I got away from gaming but a friend at work got me into the PC gaming world and I was hooked all over again. Mostly now I just play PS2. I would say that I am an average gamer when it comes to RPG’s but when it comes to Sports games I can compete with most people. I love gaming ok. There I said it
