So I’m very much a fan of Quentin Tarantino movies such as Kill Bill, From Dusk Till Dawn and Pulp Fiction. However one of the movies I’ve heard a ton about but have never seen is Reservoir Dogs. So when I saw a video game adaptation of the movie was being released I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a try and see if it would turn me on to seeing the movie. Well, let’s just say I hope the movie is a lot better than the video game.

In this game you play as just about every one of the characters in the classic Reservoir Dogs movie. Throughout the game you play as Mr. White, Mr. Blonde, Mr. Brown, Mr. Orange, Mr. Blue, Mr. Pink and Nice Guy Eddie. Supposedly the game takes you through parts of the storyline that you never saw in the movie itself, such as the stashing of the diamonds and the diamond heist itself.

This game reminded me of Grand Theft Auto, but not in a good way. The driving and the shooting are very reminiscent of past GTA games but there is none of the free roam ability in there at all. You are basically stuck doing exactly what the game tells you and nothing more. The only thing you can do, but you don’t have too, is gather blueprints on each level that will unlock extra material such as art galleries. Otherwise you follow directions through very short levels.

There were a few pluses in the largely negative game though. The soundtrack was outstanding. The game featured the “Super Sounds Of The 70’s” soundtrack from the film and it went perfectly with the storyline and game play style in the game. I’ve still got “Stuck In The Middle With You” STUCK in my head. I need to listen to my iTunes library and get it unstuck actually.

One of the unique things about this game was the ranking system. Throughout the game as you play through each level you are given a ranking of either a professional, career criminal or psycho. Depending on how you play the game you will witness a different ending, which is a nice touch to a game that really needed something good. If you shot up the diamond joint while trying to escape, for example, you got a ranking of psycho, but if you used hostages to your advantage and didn’t shoot or kill anyone then you will earn a professional rating. Cool ain’t it?

Also worth mentioning is that during game play as your adrenaline in the game rises you are given the ability to perform a bullet festival. These are very helpful, especially in situation where you are surrounded by the police. Simply hit the black button and everything slows down so you can unload a ton of bullet’s in multiple directions and take out up to five or six cops in short order. I found it to be very useful in the above described situation.

The one person they were able to get to reprise his role from the movie was Michael Madsen as Mr. Blonde and he does a very good job with his voice acting during the game. The other characters weren’t great as far as their voice work but, hey, you can’t have everything perfect right?

Now on to the negatives.

One big issue is the game is short (I beat it in less than 24 hours in just a few hours worth of playing time) and doesn’t have much replay value. The only reason you’d want to replay this game is to try and get each ranking to see the three different endings and it shouldn’t take you long considering how short this game is to play. If you really wanted to you could probably do it in about 3 or 4 days of steady on and off playing.

Unless you’re a diehard Tarantino fan, don’t go get this game. If you really have to play it just rent it because it’s not worth your hard earned money, take my word for it. I sure hope the movie is better than this game because if it isn’t I’ll be in for another major disappointment.
