Classified: The Sentinel Crisis

Publisher: Global Star

Release Date: 05/24/05

ESRB: T

Genre: shooter
Setting: military

I’ve noticed recently that there are more and more first person shooters popping up all over the video game industry. With the success of games like Doom and Halo more and more game developers are jumping on the bandwagon and developing more FPS’s. Problem is, not all of them are all that good. Classified: The Sentinel Crisis falls into that category.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not like the game is full of serious flaws or bugs. The game plays smoothly and the graphics are passable. The biggest problem is the game does nothing to peek the interest of the gamer, if you’ve played one first person shooter than you’ve played Classified: The Sentinel Crisis. In the game you play the role of an elite Black Ops solider that is being sent into enemy territory to recover a kidnapped scientist. Oh, did I mention you are a member of the Sentinel Program which outfits you with a nifty little combat suit that is very reminiscent of the outfit you see in Splinter Cell.

Said combat suit makes you pretty much impossible to kill in the game. It gives you an amount of armor that restores itself automatically when not taking fire plus the suit has a built in sensor that tells you where ALL the enemies are compared to your location. Very helpful little toy I must say.

In any case you are dropped into the Balkans to save that missing scientist. In the process you are going to kill many bad guys and run through some pretty lackluster environments. Oh yeah, you’ll be shooting a ton of bullets and killing a lot of bad guys that look like they had the same mother and father. Can anyone say Deliverance?

One unique thing about this game is you are basically stuck with the same weapon the entire time you play the game. Instead of picking up different weapons like you would in games other FPS games, you instead pick up briefcases that hold attachments to your gun. Each attachment has a different function. For example, the gun has an assault riffle attachment, sniper rifle attachment, grenade launcher attachment and a shotgun attachment (and maybe a few more I haven’t found yet).

The ones I used the most were the assault rifle and sniper rifle. The other two aren’t really all that useful unless you find a cluster of people to use them on. Speaking of a cluster of people, something positive in a mostly negative game is the fact that several things in the environment can blow up.

Fire a grenade at a car that has a few enemies hiding behind it and watch the fun begin. The car will explode and send the enemies flying. I believe the proper term for this would be “splash” damage. This was probably the one thing that I really liked about this game, which is saying a lot considering how bad this game really is.

At one point in the game you actually lose your suit and nifty gun and are left with nothing more than a little health bar and a silenced pistol. Does it make the gameplay interesting? Not at all, it just makes you want to throw your controller through the television.

As far as positives go there really aren’t that many to speak of. The game lacks any sort of multiplayer mode (not that anyone would WANT to play this game via multiplayer), the graphics are passable (but barely), the gameplay is not exactly the best in the world (who am I kidding, it’s boring as sin), the audio doesn’t even go well with the gameplay (we are at war kids, lets make the game sound like it) and the game has NO replay value (sorry, ran out of smart-aleck responses). Once you beat the story mode of this game that’s it, games done and over with.

My suggestion to you? AVOID THE GAME! You will waste a few hours of your life (much like myself) playing this game if you even rent it. Save your money and go rent another FPS if that's why you looked at Classified: The Sentinel Crisis. At least then you’ll be getting the bang for your buck.
