Sometimes the most enjoyable games can come from strange sources. That has absolutely been the case with Bookworm Adventures. The newest iteration of Popcap Game’s word game Bookworm, Adventures takes a massive leap by introducing story and rpg elements into the mix.

Having grown up playing Scrabble with my family, I’ve always enjoyed word themed games, but I was surprised by how much I got into Bookworm Adventures. More than just another exercise in vocabulary, the rather simple mechanic of putting together words to do battle with literary creatures is surprisingly deep, and the growing abilities and equipment of your protagonist only add to that complexity. Don’t be fooled by the somewhat simplistic presentation, this game will put your brain through the ringer.

Visually, Adventures has a serviceable but stylized approach, reminiscent of a well executed children’s book. The simple animations and bright colors reinforce that ideal, and I think this game would be appropriate for all but the youngest of gamers. Older players, on the other hand, may have an adjustment period going from more adult fair to this game.

The game is equally simple from the auditory end. Simple tunes and cartoonish sound effects are reminiscent of Saturday morning fare. Again, the presentation will doubtlessly appeal to the younger gamer.

It is the rare game that manages to expand beyond it’s targeted demographic to appeal to all ages, and Bookworm Adventures definitely delivers. While excellent for expanding the younger gamer’s vocabulary and literary awareness, Adventures is also deep enough to entertain even the most inveterate bibliophile. If you like words and puzzles, no matter what your age, you can’t go wrong with this game.
