Back when I first played the X-Men Legends games, I thought to myself, “Self, you know what would be REALLY cool? Being able to play as ALL the Marvel Super-Heroes!” Well, that, in a nutshell, is what Marvel: Ultimate Alliance is. An action RPG game that lets you make up your team from over twenty of Marvel’s greater heroes from Spider-Man to Thor to the ravenous Wolverine! The story of the game is rather involved, as you might expect when it involves as many super-heroes and super-villains as this one does. Dr. Doom has put together the Masters of Evil, a large group of super-villains, and is up to no good. You will be chasing the super genius doctor and his minions through numerous locales as varied as Atlantis and Valhalla and even to alien planets! All in a day's work for a band of heroes! Along the way you will battle many villains and meet many characters who will advance your story. In addition, there are numerous sub-quests given by different characters that let you flesh out other parts of the story, including the possibility of a traitor high in the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D.
For those who have played X-Men Legends, the gameplay will be very familiar; you control a team of four heroes and basically destroy everything in sight. The more enemies you dispatch, the more experience you gain which causes your characters to gain strength. In addition, you can also collect gold which can be used to upgrade various super powers and abilities which will make your team even stronger. Most enemies you destroy, as well as various objects in the environment, will dispense either gold or health or energy. Health, as the name implies, heals your characters while energy will boost your limited supply of super powers.
A new feature added to this game not seen in X-Men Legends is the concept of a your team. You will be able to create your super-team and even create a fancy team logo! When fighting as a team, you will gain extra powers and abilities that you would not otherwise have. You still have the option of changing out characters as you like throughout the game, but the team will suffer for it. On one hand, this is a nice way to strengthen up your characters, but it also penalizes a player for swapping out new characters to try and play with. Given the large roster of characters, there is a lot of potential for swapping!
Despite what the game packaging might imply, you do not use the controller as depicted; I was a little disappointed to find out that you do not thrust your arms out like Spider-Man to spin webs. Instead, each character controls exactly the same. You move using the control stick on the nunchuck and C to jump. At first, I found the attack controls to be rather poor until I decided to forgo most of the attack types and just use the basic one assigned to the A button. The other attacks are all available by motioning the controller either up, down, left or right, but I just found it easier to keep slamming the A button given that combat is often fast and furious. Your super power attacks are also handled in a similar way, by hitting the B trigger and motioning in a direction with the Wii Remote. However, you can map one to B + A and this is the attack that I most often used, just because it was easier. Camera control is handled by tilting the nunchuck controller, which may sound awkward at first, but ends up working very well.
The game supports up to four players, but a feature that is sorely lacking is online multiplayer. All the other home consoles support both online co-op mode and vs. modes, but sadly, the Wii does not yet feature online play.
The voice acting in the game is fairly well done, though a more varied script for the characters in combat would’ve been nice. I know Wolverine is the “best at what he does”, I don’t need him proclaiming it fives times a level. The graphics make it for it, however. Granted, there are better looking games, but the art manages to capture the heroes very well! It really is quite a thrill for the comic book geek in me to see Spider-Man, Thor, Deadpool and Iron Man all team up together (plus the reds in their costumes go great together to give that team unity!)
For fans of the X-Men Legends games, there is no doubt that this one is a must-have. The vastness of the roster available is just too much to pass up. Thankfully, the roster only serves as a backdrop to the fun gameplay. While it can get a little repetitive towards the end, the story is so well developed that you’ll want to find out just what Doom is up to and then punch that mask right off his face!
