I play Wii Play!

When the Wii came out, everyone got a real kick out of the Mii characters you could make. Unfortunately, the only things your poor little Miis could do was play Wii Sports. They were a blast, but your Miis can't drive your excite truck, beat face with Link, or perform surgery.

Now there is Wii Play! The game comes with a whole host of minigames to play and your Mii is back off the shelf. Many of these games were initially seen alongside Wii Sports at E3 2006, but they did not ship with the console.

Wii Play has 9 minigames included with it. All of the games can be played in single-player mode in case you're the only "Me" currently available to play your Wii. But if you have other "Mes," to form a collective "We" then they can use their Miis and your collective "We" can play Wii Play together. That's completely clear, right? No?

Fine, Wii Play has both single player and multiplayer modes available for you to enjoy alone or with family and friends... moving on...

The 9 games!!

Mii Friendly-
Table Tennis: You play Table Tennis, controlling your paddle by moving the Wiimote. Unfortunately, no swing or hit motion is required, although you can put spin on the ball by moving the paddle as you hit. Your Mii characters do not get to play, but they watch from the stands. As the game progresses, more Miis come to watch.

Find Mii- It's similarity puzzles meets where's Waldo! Lots of Miis show up on your screen doing random things like swimming, running, just hanging out, etc. and you are given certain details to pick out of the crowd. Find the right Mii, point and click. There's quite a few different objectives and beating your opponent to the right Mii can get hectic.

Pose Mii- Falling Mii Silhouettes in three different poses! You control your Mii's position by pointing with your Wiimote and rotate him by twisting. If you can match your Mii to the correct rotation and position before your opponent does, the point is yours!

Shooting Range- This goes in "Mii Friendly" by a technicality only. You go through several levels of shooting practice. Duck Hunt Ducks, Targets, clay pigeons, cans, Balloons and UFOs. Occasionally a target with your Opponent's face will appear, and you get to shoot him as well. There's no snickering dog though...

Charge- Mii Bull Riding!!... I mean Cow Riding... Ride your Bovine by holding your remote sideways. Lean forward to increase speed and backward to slow down. Gain points by crashing through straw men, and Jump barriers by snatching the Wiimote up.

No Miis Allowed-
Laser Hockey- This is played just like a game of air hockey... ok it's Pong... but it looks cool and there's cool new things like rotating your wii remote to angle to paddle. The game looks simple, but developers claim that the physics engine used to calculate the reflection angles and speed is one of the most advanced on the market.

Fishing- Your Wii remote is a fishing rod, motion sinks and raises the fishing hook. The object is to hook specific fish (displayed at the top of the screen) and snatch them up. Points are awarded or taken away depending on the fish you catch.

Billiards- It's 9-ball Pool, just like you'd play in a barroo... I mean, your game room at home on family night. You line your shot up with an overhead view and then move behind your ball to take your shot with the Wiimote as your pool cue.p Tanks!- The reason to buy the game, in my opinion. You can use the Nunchuk attachment or the D-pad on your remote to move your tank. Use your Wiimote to fire your shots (single bounce) and lay land mines. The goal is simple... kill your enemies! There are 20 levels to the game, but once you have gained a gold medal, 100 more missions become available with new types of enemies. If you're playing versus a friend, you are competing to gain the most kills. This game gets hard, but it's loads of fun.

Waitaminit... medals? Yeah, that's what I said. Not only are these minigames simple and addictive in their own right... but there are MEDALS to achieve that unlock other modes of play. Simple fun and unlockables are a tried and true combination to keep me up all night. If you're the same way, go ahead and pick up a copy of this one to play with your friends on casual nights.

About the Author, Patrick (A.K.A Norin)

I’m a native Mississippian who has escaped into Austin Texas to force-feed myself to the video-games industry. Currently I’m working for a rapidly expanding publisher and devouring every piece of information and scrap of experience I can get my hands on. When I’m not obsessively networking, I spend time playing too many video games (is it possible?) designing a private MMO, teaching/practicing Martial arts, and enjoying the life of a newlywed. I have yet to make the step into next-gen systems, but my collection of what I guess would be called “current-gen” systems is mostly complete. MMO’s are my forte, but for single player, I’ll sink days and days into a good RPG or a fun flight/space sim. Past that, if it’s got good PvP, I’m a fan.
