Star Wars has been around for years, and has influenced many peoples' lives. From walking around on the streets dressed as Darth Vader to proposing to their wives as Chewbacca, it's everywhere. And of course, Star Wars has been a big part of the videogame community. Many games have come out over the years: Knights of the Old Republic, Shadows of the Empire, Clone Wars, and Battlefront. One that stuck out for me, though, was Star Wars Rebel Strike: Rogue Squadron III.
The game is based on the original Star Wars Trilogy movie is a GameCube exclusive. It's a mix of both run and gun levels and flying in ships to take out a few Tie Fighters. If you're an aficionado of the movies you'll be pleased to know that as you play through a level flying a ship, you can choose the type of ship you would like to use. All of them are included - X-Wing, Y-Wing, A-Wing, and B-Wing.
The controls are very easy, whether you're piloting a ship or running around as a character shooting Storm Troopers. The analog stick is used to control your person, A is to shoot, and B is to use any special type of weapon, such as a bomb. When in a ship, you usually have 2 other Pilots on either side of you who you can command to Move Out, Stay with you, or Focus Solely on Enemies by pressing a direction on the D-Pad. The C Control Stick is used to open doors or use objects, and the R Button is used to speed up when in a ship. All pretty simple.
The UI isn't bad. As mentioned before, the C Control stick is used to open doors and use objects, and when you come upon one of those items, it will appear on your screen to use it. When something needs to be done, such as killing a certain person or destroying a certain building, someone comes over Radio command to tell you. Once again, all very simple.
My absolute favorite part of this game is when a scene comes up. It's not like a usual cut scene in a videogame, with the characters from the game acting it out. They take actual scenes from the original Star Wars movies and put them in the game. Seeing this made me love this game. It's one of the main reasons I continue playing it, just to see those scenes. Sure, I have the Trilogy, but why watch the whole movie…when you can play, take part in the action, and then be rewarded with a scene. Simply genius.
The sounds and music are of course, exactly what you would expect from a Star Wars game. The noise of the light sabers being turned on, or a blaster being shot, Chewbacca's Wookie noises, the noise Tie Fighters make when they soar through the air, and the sounds that X-Wings make when they shoot their guns - all of them dead on.
The game can become somewhat difficult at time. For example, in a level when you pick a ship (I personally favor the B-Wing) and must protect 3 of your cargo ships as they fly off from being destroyed by a flock of Tie Fighters, it's hard to keep track of all three, so one or two of them may be destroyed - causing you to lose the level. The level design is top notch. All of the places you see from the movies (ex. Hoth, Endor, Yavin 4, even the Deathstar). It's an awesome feeling being able to visit and battle in these places you have seen so many times in the movies.
Overall, I loved this game, from the first to the last with few problems in between, I loved it. Playing as characters from the movies, using ships from the movies, and visiting all my favorite places just gave me an awesome feeling of nostalgia. It's games like these that make the whole Star Wars universe that much better for me. The re-playability is all really dependent on you and how much you enjoy Star Wars. If you're like me, and love the movies, then you will find yourself playing the levels in this game numerous times. If you don't like Star Wars much and play this game, you might find yourself only going through it once, maybe twice, so you should perhaps try it as a rental.
I like videogames FAR too much. I play them too much, spend too much money on them ... and I LOVE IT! There is no single videogame type that I don't like, and I am willing to play anything. Games are a big part of my life (and my wallet). Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite videogame of all time, and to this day, I don't feel as if any other game can top the story, character design or atmosphere that any of the Metal Gear Solid games show us.
