Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3

Developer: Backbone Entertainment
Publisher: Capcom

Release Date: Spring 2008

ESRB: RP

Genre: shooter
Setting: arcade

There is something ultimately satisfying about a run'n'gun game. I say this as someone who is anti-gun, a mother of two and can't hit the broadside of a barn with baseball bat from 6 inches away. In the end, just mowing down a bunch of cartoon enemies is great therapy when what I really want to do is kick the cat. I'm sure the cat appreciates it.

I'd like to compare Wolf of the Battlefield: Commando 3 to the originals but alas, this is one I skipped. I must have been doing that girl thing - whatever that was. *remembers vaguely taking plastics courses and making surfboards or somesuch* Anyhoo, no matter. I am sure this will satisfy - there's no way you could climb on the back of a vehicle, grab the turret and start chewing into your enemies (and palm trees?) in the originals.

After choosing one of three soldiers: Wolf - the strapping ex-Marine who loves firepower; Coyote - the veteran who loves explosives; or Fox - the unknown stealth expert of the three whose skill with the knife is unparalleled - you and up to two other players are dropped into a mission guns blazing. The difficulty of the mission will scale dependent upon the number of players in the game.

Left stick move, right stick fire, left trigger special move...uhh...something else throws grenades. Got it.

Then you run and shoot. Everything. A lot. Periodically, you pick up health backs, grenades, and the like. Prisoners will be screaming for help - usually in cages. To let them out, shoot them. Seriously. Bullets work magic against metal bars and the prisoners then run free into the wild blue yonder. You can't shoot them either.

Each team member has a special move. I'm not sure which was more satisfying, the death and destruction of the move itself or the pause showing the animation skill of the member about to blast all the baddies into oblivion. Grenades come in handy as well assuming you don't toss them in the direction of team members... I swear, it wasn't me!

Periodically you'll come across unique weapons - turrets and the like. Turrets are cool, particularly when mounted on the back of vehicles. I skipped vehicles, damn. There are vehicles as well. Each member has his/her own particular place on the vehicle: Fox drives... err runs over people; Wolf takes the mounted artillery; and Coyote fires from the seat of the jeep or hanging from the side of the tank or whatever he finds convenient.

I feel like I should be giving you more information but for a title I had so much fun with it is an amazingly simple concept. Oh, there is a tacked on story about some General who is an evil leader of nation X (insert name here) but really, who cares? Let me in, I want to shoot! I want on the turret... I want to float down the riverbank and take the baddies out... and I hope I can survive the boss, cause that's one big freaking machine.

About the Author, Kelly Heckman (A.K.A Ophelea)

I'm a mother of two boys, ages 7 and 10 and live in the chaos that ensues. I've a permanent disability that keeps me homebound, so books, kids, games and books are my constant companions. Oh, and books, too. *grins*

My children both play games so I often play them first, getting to know exactly how something may effect my sensitive and easily stimulated older child vs. my stoic and imperturbable younger.

I like games for games; for the pure enjoyment of them and believe that no game is wholly bad, though some are real stinkers.

I also have the dexterity of a camel in mittens so find playing FPSs difficult (and I also don't like the gore) and RTSs at times can stump me. I just can't seem to move quickly enough to keep up with them. Some of my favorite games are arcade games and I'll spend 3-5 years on the same 5-6 levels because I just never get any better. But, I have fun.
