Dracula: Origin

Developer: Frogwares
Publisher: The Adventure Company

Release Date: 5/8/2008

ESRB: T

Genre: adventure
Setting: horror

Despite the horrible acting in the Van Helsing movie I'm still drawn to the story; alright it was worse than horrible, but still. I'm not sure what it is about vampires and vampire hunters that is intrigues me so, but as it keeps on inspiring story after story, game after game, I seem to be at no loss for material.

Dracula Origin is an upcoming adventure game from The Adventure Company. As Professor Van Helsing, the legendary vampire hunter, you will investigate the mysterious deaths of women all over the city. Dracula is attempting to find a manuscript to raise the dead, and Van Helsing is trying track him down with the hopes of ending things once and for all.

The story appears to focus around Dracula's early years, when little is known about him, his weaknesses and powers. You can learn how Dracula was initially cursed, and what his plans are for the manuscript he seeks. Armed with both traditional and non-traditional vampire weaponry, Van Helsing travels through detailed Gothic inspired locales on the heels of Dracula.

The game utilizes a very solid mixture of standard inventory puzzles, some text based puzzles, and a large number of extremely well-designed and original graphical puzzles to provide a nice balance of problem solving. While interactions with other characters are pretty standard, Van Helsing's notebook interface is very thorough and well done. This gave me the impression that hints, phrases, and possibly more will be required to be advance further down the game.

In my brief introduction to Dracula Origin, I found the game to be pretty standard fare for an adventure title. The puzzles, so far, show are the bright spot in the early stages of development; they are of a far higher quality than most of the games released on the market recently. The method used to integrate the story is seamless, so we can expect the rich Dracula background continue to unfold naturally throughout the game. It has been a while since I've seen a good solid adventure game with both a strong storyline and something more than a series of quickie puzzles; Dracula Origin may just break that drought.

About the Author, Nick Presidente (A.K.A AA0)

I am just a single guy that likes to play games when he gets home from work. I have loved computers ever since being allowed to play and mess around with our first 8086 computer. During my younger years I went through the console phase, with Atari, NES, Sega, and then I pretty much got bored of the typical console games by the time the SNES generation was finished. I greatly enjoy the >potential uniqueness, challenges, and flexibility you are given in computer games, and anything that breaks the stereotypes and molds of the genres I often greatly enjoy. On the other hand a game that just copies another's success with no real innovation, or real effort put into that game severely disappoints me. I currently work at a company soon to be mine, wearing many hats from management, purchasing, non-destructive testing, and even general labour when I need to get things done. I enjoy that I can be creative, and design what I need to get problems solved. As in games, if I can not be creative, if I can't construct and manage things in game, I tend not to be happy. Having recently bought my first house, In the future, I'll sure to be having less time for games, unfortunately.

Whykiea Cauthen,

It sounds like you've got a bad disk -- returning the game and getting a replacement copy sounds like your best option.

Good luck!
