EventNew York Comic Con: Day 1

I’m a newbie. I admit it. Well, when it comes to conventions and the in-depth exciting world of the gaming industry, yeah. But, I love to learn. And I love to get details and meet people responsible for making the things I enjoy. I also love connecting with kindredish spirits. Naturally, when I discovered I’d be attending New York Comic Con 2009, I was rather excited.

Today — Friday, Feb. 6, 2009 — we arrived in New York. Joe Urban aka dain120475 (our reporter for the event) and I (Sarah Woody aka monolysis) bused in from Washington, D.C. It was about a five-hour ride, but it wasn’t too uncomfortable, and it definitely beat driving and trying to park in Midtown Manhattan. We were to meet our other GamersInfo.net pal (Chris Peterson aka Rawker) as soon as we could. We had an appointment at 2 p.m., and I hate being late.

Sadly, we were a bit late. It was no big deal, though, and we still got to see Jumpgate Evolution and interview the crews of Codemasters and NetDevil.

My first impression of NYCC was pretty much what I was expecting: a lot of people, a lot of costumes and A LOT of cool stuff. Joe and I were tired and hungry since we hadn’t eaten anything since 7 a.m., but we trudged along, talking to the people we needed to talk to and looking at as much as we could in the first day. I did a cursory stroll of the exhibition floor, and Joe got an autograph and checked out some of his interests.

The fourth annual New York Comic Con offers plenty of gaming, costumes and fun. The entrance alone sparks feelings of glee.

I didn’t want to take a lot of time at one booth. Today was just my day to get a lay of the land and see what there was to see. There were some really cool games I want to check out, though. I should have more on those tomorrow, hopefully.

Sony had its booth all rocked out with DC Universe, and people were playing as either a hero or villain, so the preview gaming gave us a bit of a taste of the real game. We’ll get a preview of that up soon, too. I personally particularly enjoyed running up the buildings and not really doing much heroing OR villaining. I don’t know why, but that amused me most. I like it when a game is pretty and has nice visuals.

Two of the displays that caught my eye today were for Ghostbusters: The Video Game and The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena. The Ghostbusters: The Video Game display included an awesome backdrop and a few people in full Ghostbusters uniform and gear. As a child of the ’80s, I loved it, and I will go back to play the game. The few moments of in-game video I saw looked like good times. There was a lot of destroying of property, which you eventually get to bill to the city of New York. That’s just fun times. The The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena had a setup that was covered and involved going into a darkened area. Very appropriate for said game. And there was a hottie guy in Riddick attire standing outside promoting. Never a bad thing.

Those are but a few of the video games I saw. There were many more, and I look forward to checking them out tomorrow and Sunday. For more on the games and the event, check out http://www.nycomiccon.com.
