The Maw is an excellent game in which you control an alien who has befriended a giant, indestructible blob whose only purpose is to consume other beings and grow larger. My Mom dragged me to the couch and told me to try this game. I was hesitant at first and I had an immediate negative reaction. I was wrong about The Maw and found it to be extremely enjoyable. As I went through the first few levels, I found that I just didn’t want to play any other game until I finished. By the end I was amazed and quite happy I tried the game.

As the Blue Alien you guide the purple blob (The Maw) through many beautiful levels. Throughout your travels, you will find many alien life forms which you feed to The Maw who in turn grows larger. At the end of each level there is a special creature or other challenge which you must overcome to advance. These include giant flesh eating plants and missile drones. To overcome many of these obstacles requires The Maw eat special enemies. By doing this The Maw absorbs part of that special creature and gains a special power. There are several powers including flying and breathing fire, stinging enemies and charging like a rhino. My personal favorite is where you take control of The Maw itself and shoot lasers out of its eye stalks.
Many times during the adventure I did silly things. These included: Smashing gargantuan Rhino Beetles, eating the King Pink big eyed bouncy ball, having The Maw body slam things, and too much to consider listing here. The Maw has many challenges that you will have to overcome, like finding secret foodstuff and discovering the many different Maw upgrades. Often I had to let go of The Maw so I could maneuver alone through the world. I had to jump on many platforms and throw The Maw food because he couldn’t reach it.
Food does make him grow! By the last level The Maw was so huge he used three-fifths of the screen! The Maw even got so big he could crush castle-sized gates and small space ships. The Maw also could eat many small machine defenses set up by the robot things to contain him and destroy the force fields that used to impede him.
Overall, I think this is a great game for everyone, whether they are kids or adults. The landscape is beautifully crafted and the story is brilliant. I never got bored by this simple game and it kept my attention for quite a while. One of the many reasons I enjoyed this game is because it is quite unusual. The whole game is about controlling a giant purple blob and using it to consume everything in sight! It is a great game and I recommend it to anyone who would like to try something a little unusual.
