Flip's Twisted World

Screenshot_004 While checking out the Majesco games, I saw a game for the Wii that I thought looked pretty cool. Flip's Twisted World is about an apprentice wizard that gets into some mischief while his boss isn't around, and Flip gets sucked into a cube world, where he must find a way out without letting out the evil that has been trapped in the cube.

The story immediately reminded me of Mickey Mouse and Fantasia, but clearly this game stands on its own. The world of the cube is cartoony in nature. In Flip's Twisted World, you start with your wizard's spell book as your weapon, and you use the spell book to beat enemies off you. As the game progresses, you'll get additional powers, allowing you to freeze enemies, slow them down, zap with electricity, etc.

The graphics were cool-looking; the colors were bright and fun. The sound suited the game without seeming annoying. Then I picked up the controls....

Glac_screenshot_005 The cube world is a cube, and the directions adhere to that cube, which means sometimes floors are the walls and the walls are the ceiling. It's a crazy, mixed up world, and it seemed like a cool concept. I was curious about the difficult using the controls to flip the world and allow Flip to use the wall as a floor, etc. The game is meant for children, so I thought that would be a good thing to try.

I spent at least 10 minutes trying to do my first flip. Moving around was intuitive, and you could easily figure out what to do to get Flip going. However, once I got to the wall that I was suppose to then flip Flip, I just couldn't get it to work. The combination of buttons and Wii-mote action was not at all intuitive, and it was so frustration trying to make it happen. Flip kept falling into oblivion, which I thought was rather strange since the world was a cube and all topsy-turvy anyway. You'd think he would have landed on some platform.

I wasn't sure if the control scheme was difficult only to me and that I just couldn't do it. So, I handed the controls to the demonstrator, and she — the lady who was suppose to be showing others how to play — couldn't successfully flip Flip more than once in a row. She fell to her doom almost as often as I.

Screenshot_047 I really wanted to like Flip's Twisted Adventure because I like interesting game mechanics and concepts, but the controls were just too horrid for me. Unless the developers decide to change the control scheme, I'm going to avoid this game when it comes out in early 2010. If you like a challenge and are a master ninja with Wii controls, you may enjoy Flip's Twisted Adventure. If you're new to the Wii or if your children aren't very good with precision and timing, this game will not be for you.
