Do you like gore? Do you like sexy women? If the answer is yes, this is your game. We get sexy vampire/human Rayne, sucking blood off bodies to gain some health, making it her every day meal.
Lets just start by saying that this game is all about combat and how you kill people. There is a diverse combinations of combos that you can pull out to kill people. You can either hit them a little, then suck the rest of the blood off. Or you can just suck the blood from start. Or you can just kill them with your blades, guns or whatever you want.
It is also about making the right decision at the right time in order to kill them all without getting yourself killed. The game is just pure blood and if you don’t like blood in a game you shouldn’t be looking at this one. The hallways get full of blood after your done killing your enemies – there are pools of it. But hey, this is fun for a lot of people, just to see all this gore and blood around. I, personally, don’t like it much.
The game can get rather monotonous after a while because all you do is kill and kill and kill. Although this is often the point of a First Person Shooter, many First Person Shooters there is variation. Here there I found little. Enemies most of the time perform the same moves, although they do get more difficult as you keep advancing in the game. But it is pretty much the same over and over again. Even though you get new weapons and new “moves” or “specials” while you progress in the game, they will get old fast.
You have a few modes of “kicking-ass”, you can either use your legs and kick the heck out of your opponents, you can use your blades, or you can use some guns that you will get. It is your choice which one to use, or if you want to - use all of them in one simple flourish.
You also get what I like to call “vampire specials”. You get aura-vision that allows you to see invisible doors or items. You also have this power that turns your blades into fire, and you are more powerful and some things can’t hit you, like vampires. As you keep progressing through the game you’ll gain more “vampire specials” such as super speed. They all add variation to the game, of course, but not enough in my opinion.
Thankfully, there is a story and it is indeed interesting. It helps to keep you playing the game as long can because you want to know what might happen next, but unfortunately it was not enough to keep me increasingly hooked to the game.
The controls are pretty easy to get used to, they are well designed and are comfortable for this type of game, where you need to move your fingers pretty quickly in order to get the combos/moves done.
The graphics are up-to-date. Not just the cut scenes but the in-game graphics as well. The cut scenes are pretty detailed and beautiful looking, that I have to admit. I was impressed by them.
In the HUD(Heads-Up-Display) you can see how much health you have left, which you can recover by sucking blood off your opponents, and how much “mp/stamina” is left. This is, the stamina/mp is what lets you do the special vampire moves. If it empties out, you won’t be able to pull the special moves. All you have to do to get it back to full, though, is kick some nice butt with your normal moves and it will fill up slowly as you keep killing.
Sound is what I would call passable. For example, voiceovers are pretty good but it feels as if they did take a breath nor a break while they spoke. The music is good but it is not this type of music that you’d call a catchy tune.
The level design is good too. You can interact with almost every object in a room, you can destroy them all leaving it really messy. Even though you will see repetitive levels sometimes, there is some variation.
This is not a game that everyone will like. It is definitely a game for the gore-lovers and most of all for those that love this type of combat, where your goal is to increase a few skills over time through repetition. There is a good and interesting story, but at its heart, this is a bloodfest and should be considered as such before purchasing it.
