One of the coolest products I saw at the Consumer Electronics Show was the PEREGRINE glove, which is basically a keyboard that fits snug on your hand for comfortable gaming or anything else you use a keyboard for.
The PEREGRINE was designed with real-time strategy and MMO gamers in mind as well as comfort. The glove has 18 Touch Points and three Activator Pads, which you can program for about 40 keystrokes. The software that automatically installs when you plug the glove into a USB lets you see the glove, select the sensors and then program up to five profiles so that you can easily assign them to the glove for various games or uses. It does not incorporate motion-sensor technology.
The PEREGRINE glove is made from military-grade materials and is hand-washable. I know I tend to eat and play games, and I’m sure many others do, too. The ability to wash the PEREGRINE is definitely a plus. There are also ventilated mesh spots located in key locations to help keep your hands cool. I tried on the medium version, and the glove is fairly comfortable. I would probably need the small size, though. I have small hands. There is also a large size.
Right now, there are only left-handed gloves available, since most people use their right hands for controlling the mouse. However, there will be a right-handed glove at some point, I’m sure. You can use the PEREGRINE for games or any other program that allows keyboard controls, such as Word and Photoshop. I was told that the CEO and creator of PEREGRINE can type 80 words a minute with the glove. That’s better than most people can type normally.
The glove attaches to the computer via USB that has a wire attached to a magnetic break-away pod. The pod is very useful because the moment I tried it on, I would have ripped the cord out of the USB port had it not been for the magnetic connector. It will definitely be helpful to prevent damage. There’s even a snap that lets you know when it’s connected.
I tried using the PEREGRINE, but I didn’t have a ton of time with it. The concept seems awesome, but I think the learning curve may be a little high if you’re not very good at adapting to new ways of interfacing. However, the use seemed like it might be fairly intuitive, so if you start using the glove early on in life (or put enough time into it), you should be able to master it easily enough.
The PEREGRINE will be available this year, and you can preorder now at the introductory price of $129.99. For more information, visit theperegrine.com.
