New Super Mario Bros. Wii is yet another Super Mario game, but this time, there is a twist, and it does not disappoint. New Super Mario Bros. Wii is — yes, you guessed it — Super Mario on the Wii! Let me start by saying this is a really beautiful game. Everything you remember from the Mario franchise is back and revamped and looks pretty awesome for a Wii title. The classic side-scroller action is back with this one, ladies and gentlemen. It resurfaces all your old memories of stomping mushrooms and spitting fire, but now you can do so with your Wii.

This is the same old story that has become synonymous with our good old plumber pal Mario. You may have guessed already, but Princess Peach has gone and gotten herself kidnapped again by the evil Bowser and needs our good old friend Mario — or should I say friends — to get her out of the jam. So, you need to set out on your mission to save that blonde princess. Now, I know what you’re thinking: Peach should have learned years ago to watch her back for evil koopas or at least get a bodyguard. Alas, she has done neither. Rvl_mariobrosw_02ss05_e3

The single player in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is pretty solid. All the elements of the classic side-scroller are back and enhanced with beautiful graphics and some 3-D character models. The addition of 3-D character models to this side-scroller could not have been done years ago. Things like light-illuminating levels that let you see only a few feet in front of you, sandstorms and mist in the air that change how you need to play a level, and tilting platforms make this game even more challenging. Nintendo also added a few more suits to New Super Mario Bros. Wii. These suits allow the player to do things such as fly in the air and spit snowballs.

You can have loads of fun taking on Mario’s world with your cute companion Yoshi by your side through some levels and saving Princess Peach on your own, but let’s be realistic. You bought a Wii for a reason. The goal in mind was to play with your friends, and yes, Nintendo realized that. You can play with up to three friends. Each person gets a different character to tackle the game with. These characters are Mario, Luigi and two Toad-looking characters. You know ... the little mushroom-topped character everyone seems to forget in every Mario game? Rvl_mariobrosw_02ss07_e3

The multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros. Wii is a great time for any kind of gamer — the casual gamer out to have fun and the hardcore gamer who just wants to mess around. New Super Mario Bros. Wii helps put the casual onlooker in the game with the most veteran of players.

While playing the single player, if casual players get stuck or confused on a part of this game for too long, they can get help from the game in a unique way. New Super Mario Bros. Wii has a feature called the super guide mode that plays a video of the level being completed. This video also shows the secret areas of the levels along with classic Mario features, such as infinite 1-up opportunities.

There are two game modes to be played in multiplayer. You can play Battle Mode, in which you fight to be the only person to finish the level, or you can play Coin Mode, in which you fight to be the person with the most coins. Rvl_mariobrosw_02ss03_e3

The multiplayer in New Super Mario Bros. Wii changes up the classic view of Super Mario and makes the game new again. You can play through the single player and travel from world to world and castle to castle. You can also go the other route and plug in a few more controllers and have a great time with your friends. This helps keep the game fresh and stops you from ripping your hair out. Instead, you can just elbow your buddy in the stomach and throw him into a koopa shell or lava.

The good thing about New Super Mario Bros. Wii is it is very easy to pick up and start playing. You can play this with friends or alone and have a great time either way. It is fun to have to work as a team with your buddies to get through a level or just get them attacked by an evil mushroom instead. All gamers will rejoice in their memories of Mario Bros. and have a blast doing it. If you own a Wii and don’t already have this title, BUY IT!
