Gamecom777-7

It is no secret that I am a fan of anything Plantronics puts out. So when I received the GameCom 777 headset, I was really excited. I have used quite a few 5.1 headsets but never a 7.1, so I was quite interested in how/if there was a difference in quality.

Before my review, let me give you a little bit of information about the GameCom 777:

Once I hooked the GameCom 777 up to my PC via the Dolby USB card, it was immediately recognized. I have to point out that whenever I seem to get a new headset for the PC, Windows 7 does not like to recognize it. However, right off the bat, it was immediately picked up and ready for use. Of course, my initial thought was I am going to jump straight into gaming and see what this bad mama-jama is made of. That was until I looked over at the television and saw the movie Transformers playing. Then my thinking quickly changed; why not start with a movie?

So I put the Transformers Blu-ray into the computer; just by the previews, I was actually blown away, literally and figuratively. My eardrums automatically started kicking the crap out of me. I have a saying: If you’re testing a headset, begin with it all the way up. Otherwise, you cannot get the grasp of the overall quality. Normally you will hear some crackling, followed by a few “pops” if they are of mediocre quality. I heard nothing but crisp clean sound and deep rich bass with the GameCom 777. There is one particular scene I forwarded to — the one in which the Autobots and Decepticons are fighting on the streets. Well when the pulse cannon shot, my jaw hit the floor. I was so impressed with the bass and overall sound of it that I had no words.

After I picked my jaw up from the floor, I decided it was time to do some gaming. I quickly put it Battlefield: Bad Company 2. I have been asked before why it is I use this game for these reviews. I will put it plainly: Because D.I.C.E.’s Frostbite Engine has excellent sound. By the time I get to the main menu I am, suffice to say, blown away yet again. The sound is unbelievably crisp and clear. Again, I am still astonished. But there was one final test: firing the M-95 sniper rifle. I waited in a bush long enough to find the perfect shot, I held my breathe and fired. Immediately, I threw off the headset, stood up and shouted: “YES!” Then my wife looked over at me and told me to sit back down.

I highly recommend this headset if you are a PC gamer. It is insanely comfortable and has great sound quality no matter the level of volume. If you are anything like me, max volume is the only way to play a PC game.
