German-based company Bigpoint unveiled Ruined Online this year at GDC. Ruined Online is a post-apocalyptic massive multiplayer online game in which players engage in various tournament-style matches. Ruined Online was built entirely in the United States, led by a San Francisco-based team. The game’s setting is in fact a destroyed San Francisco landscape, perfect for players to interact in ensuing carnage against one another. Ruined Online is presented in the third-person view with cel-shaded, comic book-like graphics.
Out of six possible “bad guys,” players will compete to become the ultimate villain: the Assassin, a sexy vixen adept at slicing heads; the Mad Medic, a homicidal lunatic eager to dish out some bad medicine; the Crawler, a sewer freak with Wolverine-like claws; the Mutant, a behemoth body-crusher; the Samurai, an efficient killer, ending fights before they started; and the Enforcer, an elite guard seeking to quell this rebellious nonsense. At this point in the Beta, players have three maps to choose from in iconic San Francisco: Alcatraz, Fort Point and the Golden Gate Bridge.
A spokesperson at Bigpoint’s booth confirmed the game will be free to play with the opportunity to purchase customizable upgrades if desired by the player. There will also be no download time as well as full compatibility with any browser. Ruined Online also happens to be following the 3-D trend by featuring stereoscopic 3-D utilized by Nvidia’s technology.
“In under a year, our SF-based team has created an extraordinary browser game that nothing else in our segment can match,” said Heiko Hubertz, founder/CEO of Bigpoint. “We are excited to release this game to the world and are confident that it will appeal strongly to American gamers who enjoy exotic weapons, rich graphics and carnage."
