My name is Ed, and I'm addicted to Star Wars.
I admit it - I've been a fan since I've been able to put together coherent thoughts. I was only able to see The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi in the movie theaters, but that didn't mean I was less of a fan. I was just too young to see the first there. And of course, like all fans, I have my favorite characters. There's Luke Skywalker, who many consider a whiner, but I like him just fine. And then, there's Boba Fett: Master Bounty Hunter. Speaking only when he has to, Fett was just too cool. The armor, the helmet - way too cool.
So, when I was given the opportunity to review Star Wars: Bounty Hunter, I jumped at it. Hey, it's Jango not Boba, but, he's still a Fett in Mandalorian Armor. So, it qualifies in the way cool category. The story of the game follows the adventures of Jango Fett. It elaborates on events seen in Attack of the Clones, such as Jango being asked to be the subject for the clone army. If Fett is one of your favorite characters, you need to take this game out for a spin. It feels extremely cool to move around the areas, acting all Fett-like and looking for bounties amongst the crowd as you hunt your primary targets. I feel the game does a very decent job of capturing the feel. Sadly, it falls a bit short in other areas.
I had a lot of problems with the interface. From making sure I selected the right weapon, to keeping myself from falling to certain doom in areas with very little solid ground to stand on. Now, I understand Fett has tons of weapons at his disposal, so I can see how it could be hard to cram them all into the interface, but I can't shake the feeling that something better could have been done about this. The targeting aspect of the interface made me experience divided feelings. I appreciated the targeting moving to new targets by itself when the previous one was dead, but I had problems using some of the weapons properly, like the cable to tie bounties down. I ended up having to try a few times before I could get it to do what I wanted it to do.
The levels were yet another thing that had me going bipolar on this game. Some levels did a great job of capturing the feeling of the movie, while others, well... they were more frustration than anything. In some of those, a lot of jumping around was required, with certain doom waiting for you if you missed a jump. That translated into a lot of reloading the game for me, which takes me to what's probably my biggest gripe. Loading time was just atrocious if you decided to restart a level. More often than not, even if I died at the beginning of the stage, I'd end up using a continue just to avoid the insanely long loading time. Although I'm fine with loading times between levels, or at the beginning of the game, it really got in the way of my enjoyment and made those frustrating levels just even more frustrating.
In terms of graphics and sounds, the graphics aren't the best you can find these days, but this game has been out for a while now so to complain is a bit unfair. The sounds and music is very Star Wars, so in that respect it helps a lot with the immersion.
So let's talk about the gameplay. You'll find yourself hunting a primary target and having secondary bounties that you can fulfill and get credits for. The premise makes sense, although I admit that I found myself focusing more on the primary objectives and ignoring some of those secondary bounties. It was just too hard at times to try and tag them and use the cable to tie them down when you were trying to avoid incoming fire from enemies that just keep coming at you.
I know I've pointed out a lot of things that bothered me about the game, but for the price this game is available these days, it's not a bad game. I just didn't find it as enjoyable as I expected it to be. For me, a lot of the fun came from running around as Jango. The story is decent, albeit no masterpiece. But, the story does a good job of linking with the movies, so that was a nice thing.
So the final word is, if able, at least rent the game. If you find it used and for a good price, give it a shot. For those Star Wars fans out there, you definitely want to at least rent it because regardless of my frustrations with it, the game did quell my thirst for things Star Wars in a way that should keep me going for a while.
I was a software engineer until events in my life gave me a kick on the behind and I found myself exploring my true passion, writing. Other than gaming, I love reading, especially fantasy and science-fiction. I like my games to be challenging, but not frustrating. Although I don't want to see games becoming books with pretty graphics, I don't mind seeing solid storytelling in my games.
