Tak 3: The Great JuJu Challenge

Developer: THQ
Publisher: THQ

Release Date: Quarter 1, 2006

ESRB: RP

Genre: action
Setting: cartoon

As will become a running theme in my review of children's titles (and a blessing to most parents), THQ's latest incarnation of Tak - Tak 3: The Great JuJu Challenge is now co-op! Hurray for those of us with more than one child or for children who want to play with their parents!

Yes, Tak is back again only this time he's entered The Great JuJu Challenge - a race of time and skill against members from other villages. His partner in this race is none other than Lok, the former apprentice to the master sage (but really quite an oaf).

The Great JuJu Challenge is something like The Amazing Race (of television) in that you have to gather clues and get to the next point in a certain amount of time. Tak and Lok both have their special abilities and both are built differently so suited for different physical tasks. This may mean that Lok has to throw Tak at times.

Collection has always been a mainstay of the series (and a bit of a tedium). Tak 3, while still needing collection - how else will you gain health and mana without feathers! - is more of a puzzle and cooperative strategy game between two players. It IS the Great JuJu Challenge after all! And I for one am gratified to see it move beyond its roots into something a child of 8 or a child or 40 can enjoy.

Expect to see Tak and Lok this holiday season on GameCube, Playstation 2, Xbox, Gameboy Advance and Nintendo DS.

About the Author, Kelly Heckman (A.K.A Ophelea)

I'm a mother of two boys, ages 7 and 10 and live in the chaos that ensues. I've a permanent disability that keeps me homebound, so books, kids, games and books are my constant companions. Oh, and books, too. *grins*

My children both play games so I often play them first, getting to know exactly how something may effect my sensitive and easily stimulated older child vs. my stoic and imperturbable younger.

I like games for games; for the pure enjoyment of them and believe that no game is wholly bad, though some are real stinkers.

I also have the dexterity of a camel in mittens so find playing FPSs difficult (and I also don't like the gore) and RTSs at times can stump me. I just can't seem to move quickly enough to keep up with them. Some of my favorite games are arcade games and I'll spend 3-5 years on the same 5-6 levels because I just never get any better. But, I have fun.
