I was poking around the Majesco booth when I found a hidden gem. Sure, it may be hard to describe a game carrying one of the biggest movie licenses of all time as a hidden gem, but it was hidden - in that I really did not expect to find a good game, let alone have the most fun I had on the show floor. Majesco brings the 1970s horror movie franchise to consoles and the PC this year in Jaws Unleashed.

Picture Grand Theft Auto under water. The feeling of a rampage in GTA is the same feeling you get when you play Jaws. In the demo I played, I was Jaws, in a river full of fish, boats and most importantly fishermen. The game is extremely fast paced, and lets you bite just about anything you swim across. My favorite moment had me grab the fishing line under a boat and drag it down-stream. When it finally broke away, I circled back and complete with the theme music, rushed at the boat. Just before I was about to crash into it, I jumped and devoured the poor fisherman whole.

Demoing on the PC, the controls should be familiar to shooter fans. You have WASD for movement, with the mouse directing where you are headed. As you are a fish and operate in all directions - the controls do take some getting used to. They are fast paced, and about as responsive as you would expect a fish to be. I felt like a shark - mission accomplished. It was so immersive! (pun intended)

To attack you hit the left mouse button. This is your bite. A neat trick I discovered part way through is that if you hold down the left mouse button you will clench whatever poor victim you have caught between your teeth. Even better? If you swing your mouse back and forth your shark will rip him to shreds and fill the water with blood. It was bloody fin-tastic! I did find sometimes if you did not shake the victim around in your teeth, they would try to swim away when you released them. We cannot have that! The right mouse button charges up a meter that lets you do more damage. This is especially useful when your target is not a sailor, but a boat.

What was the point of the game? I must confess, I was having too much fun killing to notice. I do know I got periodic alerts telling me I was hungry, which only made me want to kill more. Apparently there are also missions, a shark has places to be and things to do, but if you cannot guess yet, I was never much of one for the missions when there is mindless chaos to seek.

One disappointing feature was that at the end of the river I was in were some whales. Unfortunately, despite many attempts, they are eye candy. I hit an invisible wall and am told that the current is too strong. Hopefully as the game progresses they'll let me kill whales!

Generally, for those who enjoy mindless chaos, or even mindless chaos with a small drop of purpose - Jaws Unleashed looks like a barrel of fun. The PC version, to me at least, looked a little better than the console version - especially when it came to the controls. Time will only tell whether the game also has the depth (oh the pun!) to hold people's attention span more than the length of an E3 demo. The good news? I didn't want to leave - even though I was running late - until a random stranger informed me I'd killed everything in the stream and that he wanted a turn.
