Fighting games have always been a large part of the gaming community, and there are some very well known names in the genre: Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Dead or Alive, Super Smash Brothers and Bloody Roar, just to name a few. All very good games, but my personal favorite will always be the Tekken series. With awesome visuals, tons of different fighting styles, and great characters, Tekken is more than just another great name in the wide range of fighting games. Tekken 5 was released in arcades, and now, it has come to the PS2. I have found it to be by far, the best of the series.
In the beginning scene, you see Heihachi Mishima and his son, Kazuya Mishima, just getting up from a huge battle. They are being attacked by a swarm of Jack robots, yet desite their long time father-son feud, they band together. In the end, Kazuya throws his father into the fight alone, runs off, and we are lead to believe that Heihachi dies in a big explosion. At the end of the scene, we see a large person emerging from the rubble of the building….but it's not Heihachi…who is it? His name is Jinpachi, father of Heihachi, whom Heihachi stuffed in the basement of a Mishima Zaibatsu building for a long time (This family has enough problems as it is, do we need to add to the constant hatred?) He couldn't survive anymore, and became victim to an evil that took over his body. Jinpachi himself has begun the 5th King of Iron Fist Tournament. Now, a bunch of original characters, and 4 new ones, are out to get control of the Mishima Zaibatsu. (Some have entered the tournament for their own reasons.)
This game has gone back to the original Tekken gameplay, the one we all know. While Tekken 4 had changed it, Tekken 5 reverts to the style we'd been accustomed to in the first three games of the series. Each character is given their own fighting style. Two examples would be Steve Fox's Boxing Style or King's Wrestling styles. They are also different types of game modes. Story Mode - in which you play through the story of your character and are awarded with a video at the end; Arcade Mode - were you can work your way up the ranks, giving you a new title as you gain enough experience (ex.: Master, Expert, Tekken Lord); Time Attack Mode, Survival Mode, and Practice - all favorites from pervious games. A new game mode - Devil Within - has been added. It's a 3D action game in which you play as Jin Kazama trying to find out your past. They also have given you ARCADE HISTORY mode, in which you are able to play Tekken, Tekken 2, and Tekken 3, which I found to be a great addition to the game.
The moment you see this game, the changes in graphical style over previous iterations will astound you.The graphics in this game, the character design, everything, are absolutely beautiful. The detail on all of them is just mind blowing. The environments around you are great. For example, there is a level in which you fight in front of a burning temple. The fire gives heat distortion to the environment, which just gives you a cool feeling of almost being there. The ambience around you such as water and things like that are also very well done.
The controls are very easy to get used too. Two punch buttons, two kick buttons, directionals, and tons of combos if they are pressed in a certain way. I will admit though, this game seems to be faster paced than past games. So, you need fast fingers at some points to continue on.
The game is fairly easy, if you are good at games fighting games. I do have one rather large complaint about this game….his name, as I mentioned before, is Jinpachi. He is one of your typical "block everything, large, impossible" bosses that you see in Mortal Kombat Deception or Deadly Alliance, though he isn't quite as hard to hit he is allowed too many cheap shots. He is the only character in the game who can propel a fire ball at your from his stomach, which takes a good 80% of your health away. Just thinking about him angers me.
This game is VERY replayable. I received it 2 days after its release, and its pretty much all I have played since then. Just the whole look of it and its awesome gameplay keeps you wanting more and more, no matter how many times you play through it. Overall, I find this game unbelievable. I was very surprised with how good it is, and if you are in walking distance, or you are able to drive to a store carrying, buy it. You will not be sorry. Playing with your friends is always fun, and can become quite competitive. Like I said before, Tekken 5 is by far, the best Tekken to be released.
I like videogames FAR too much. I play them too much, spend too much money on them ... and I LOVE IT! There is no single videogame type that I don't like, and I am willing to play anything. Games are a big part of my life (and my wallet). Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite videogame of all time, and to this day, I don't feel as if any other game can top the story, character design or atmosphere that any of the Metal Gear Solid games show us.
