Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Operation Resurrection

Developer: Gray Matter Studios
Publisher: Activision

Release Date: 05/30/2003

ESRB: M

Genre: shooter
Setting: WWII

In this game, you take the role of U.S. Army soldier and Special Service operative, B.J. Blazkowicz. You will be responsible for uncovering a plot by the Third Reich to use the supernatural to raise an ancient Germanic King from the dead in order to win the Second World War and it will be up to you to stop them. In this first person shooter by Activision, you get to have it all. You get a chance to blast away at the undead, Nazis, and superhuman beings. The only thing missing are aliens. The game is built off the success of the old Castle Wolfenstein PC game.

Your missions will take you through many Indiana Jones inspired Nazi bases and also German towns and countryside. Your missions will involve a great deal of stealth activity, finding secret levers, and killing Nazis. The missions themselves are relatively easy. Some are difficult only because it is easy to miss some key points in darker environments. The storyline is well developed which really keeps you wanting to play to the next checkpoint.

The game play itself is fairly easy to pick up and you can adjust the controls to fit your preferences. You will shoot, run, crouch, and crawl your way through the various environments. The AI for the game is mediocre so you can take out the enemies provided you have enough ammo. You will start the game with minimal equipment but can pick up a lot more as you progress. Once you are able to get the sniper rifle, most levels are fairly easy as with the use of a scope you can clear many obstacles before you are even within earshot. As far the level bosses which can be fairly tough, you will need to use a combination of more powerful weapons along with strategic maneuvering.

The graphics of the game are very good. You really became immersed in the environment because of the solid graphics and these were greatly enhanced by well done sound effects. Everything from footsteps, to water drips, to echoes are captured nicely. The various enemies have a lot of nice detail and are well done. I really liked that they give you a wide variety of German soldiers as well as level bosses.

Overall, I really enjoyed the game and found it difficult to stop playing. I would recommend this game for at least a rental and possibly even a purchase.
