Every once and a while, a game comes out that is completely new and unique. Something that's never been done before, something that exists just to blow gamers away. Recently, we were given just that. It came in the form of Darkwatch, a new game based in the old west …with Vampires.

You are Jericho Cross, an outlaw in the year 1876, who plans on performing his biggest train theft ever. Unfortunately, there is no treasure, as Cross soon finds out after blowing up the lock to the door. Instead, he releases the oldest of Vampires, Lazarus, who was the former creator of the Darkwatch, an organization against all evil, dead and alive. Lazarus, after being freed, does not kill Cross. No, instead, he bites him, cursing him to become the Undead. He also lets off some sort of pulse, which wakes the dead. Jericho must now cope with his new found lifestyle, though it isn't all that bad. Jericho has acquired new powers, such as Vampire Jump and Blood Shield. Eventually, Jericho joins the Darkwatch, who aren't all too happy to have him with them, but can see that he can do something for them.

I'm just going to go ahead and state my favorite part of the game … the guns. They are just so cool looking. Each gun is designed to fit with the times - mostly silver and black, with some spikes here and there. Best part is, each gun has a blade on the bottom of the handle. Of all the guns, my favorite would have to be the Shotgun, a 4-barreled powerhouse. The only gun without a blade would be the Rocket Launcher … but instead, a spiked mace is at the end; pretty powerful.

Like a lot of videogames these days, you have the ability to choose whether you will become Evil or Good. How? Well, I discovered two different ways. First, if a human walks up to you who has been cursed by Lazarus, you can do one of two things. You can completely kill her, suck her blood, and just be an all around jerk, or you can suck the curse from her. Just grab the victims wrist, and … suck the curse from her, like I just said … Also, there are these souls in chains you may see throughout the games, they don't move, just kind of stand there. When you get near them, you can choose to free their soul or purge them to hell. Whichever side you choose gets you different abilities. You can even go back and forth between good and bad, choosing the bad choice and then choosing the good one, etc.

The controls are pretty much the same as any other FPS on the X-Box. R to shoot, A to jump, then there is Reload, and other things like that. The white and black buttons are used to scroll through and use your Vampire Powers, and X is for you to use your Melee Attacks with your guns. Finally, L is to throw a grenade (dynamite, in this game).

The level design is great, especially the old western town setting. It's just like being in an old Cowboy movie. Caves and valleys, full of zombies of Cowboys and Indians, carrying sickles, guns, arrows, and shotguns. There are some other creative enemies, such as Banshees (my least favorite, btw), who are women who can fly and scream … yeah. Then you have Oozers, very large and fat monsters who vomit on you with green slime that can do damage over time. Finally, there are Vipers, who are snake-like monsters, probably the hardest in the game, who have the ability to disappear and reappear after you shoot them.

Once you do join the Darkwatch, you have to take a mission from them. You may have to find and retrieve and artifact, or drive the "Darkwatch Dune Buggy," which is actually really fun, but … the car can only be used in one level, which was sort of a let down.

Online play is pretty fun. They have the usual game types. Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, and Capture the Flag. There's also a new game where you must steal all the souls you can while trying to stop your opponents from doing the same. This can also be done in team mode.

All in all Darkwatch is a good game. It doesn't have the best graphics, but in most games that doesn't matter. If you're looking for some fun, make sure to pick this one up, whether you rent or buy.

About the Author, Kevin (A.K.A 6sh0tocelot)

I am currently a 22 year old college student at Salem State College in Salem, Mass. I hope to graduate with a degree in history and go on to become a high school teacher. I have the best friends ever (better than yours) and would hate to live without them. I work at Stop & Shop ... and I hate it.

I like videogames FAR too much. I play them too much, spend too much money on them ... and I LOVE IT! There is no single videogame type that I don't like, and I am willing to play anything. Games are a big part of my life (and my wallet). Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite videogame of all time, and to this day, I don't feel as if any other game can top the story, character design or atmosphere that any of the Metal Gear Solid games show us.
