I have played a bunch of different sports games, but this was my first soccer game on the PS2 platform. World Tour Soccer 2006 by the British developer SCEA was a lot of fun. It offers a lot to the gamer that is not a soccer enthusiast.
The game has a similar set up to other sports genre games, as it offers a play now feature as well as a franchise type feature. I found the play now feature most enjoyable, as I don't fully understand the soccer franchise system. The franchise system lets you start with a school team and slowly build them up into a professional level squad. This usually occurs when the players are about 17 to 18 years old. The franchise mode lets you control personnel movements and other strategic moves. The game offers a wide variety of teams from various leagues and countries to play. Similar to the Madden series, there are unlockables that will let you play in new stadiums and historical teams.
The game play is pretty solid and easy to figure out. The pace was really good and the goals were easy to score. I found this enjoyable. Again, I don't like soccer a lot, mostly because there isn't much scoring. Thus, I thought this game would be great to play with your friend since the action is quick. I really liked that you could do a deliberate dive to try and draw a free kick. I thought that addition was very clever.
The graphics of the game a fairly solid. They are not on the EA Sports level, but not far off at all. The game offers an Eye Toy Cameo that lets you take a picture of your head or maybe your dog's head and create a player using that image. So you could have a player on your team named Fido and he will bear a strong resemblance to a Basset Hound. Of course this feature requires a lot of memory, so account for it with your memory card. The sound effects are decent, and you get the crowd doing the various traditional chants from the club team or country. I thought that was cool and turned my speakers up loud, so it felt like I was really playing at Wembley Stadium.
Overall, I really enjoyed the game for what it is. A soccer enthusiast might have a more discerning opinion, but for the average gamer this is very fun game. So enjoy some football and have a pint when you are done.
