My only experience to date with web based gaming has been the wildly popular sports simulation at Whatifsports.com. So I was pretty excited to try this British web based soccer simulator. Manager League lets you take a small club team and build it into an international powerhouse. You will take on computer teams as well as other player controlled clubs.
You begin by creating your team. You pick the team name and country of origin. I first started with a team from Germany, but then switched to a team from the United States. I immediately noticed that the player ratings dropped dramatically, so be careful which country you go with. You get to choose your team name, stadium type, offensive strategy, defensive style and your starting lineups. The game does have a very good player guide that helps get you started, and I would recommend using it often. You are also responsible for managing personnel moves and team finances. Of course, the better your team plays, the more fans that will attend and the more money you will make. You can also earn money through selling sponsorships. Again, bigger success and bigger sponsors.
Once you have your team all set up, you must plan your training camp. You decide where to hold it. Do you stay home or go to some remote location? Of course, prices increase when you travel. You also determine what your team will focus on. Shooting, passing, teamwork? There are many options to go with. You can also focus on individual training for your players as well. Once camp finishes, you will begin play.
The play is pretty basic, you have your table (schedule) and follow it. You can set different strategies for different teams, and then the simulator does the rest. The fixtures (results) will keep you updated on your progress. You can also challenge teams to friendly matches as well, to build up your players.
The game has an e-mail system interface that keeps you informed of different things that go on with your team. Thing like challenges, injuries and transfer (trade) offers are all in this area.
The game setup itself is very solid and offers a ton of information. However, as I write this today my team, Homeland Security, is 7-1 with 8 draws (ties). I think the game needs to have shoot outs so you either win or lose. Additionally, you can purchase credits which will help you upgrade your team. So we basically get into George Steinbrenner mode where you can buy a championship rather than build one.
If you enjoy soccer, you would likely find this sim very enjoyable, especially if you don't mind shelling out a few Pounds or Euros. If you prefer American sports, check out Whatifsports.com and look for my review on that site.
