It's amazing what you can find in a closet: an old pair of pants, a T-shirt from the 1985 Van Halen Tour, your eccentric Uncle and even an entire fantastic world. That's the basic premise of C.S. Lewis' classic tale Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Four children discover that the wardrobe in their new home is really a portal to the magical world of Narnia, full of magic, fierce witches and talking lions. Disney is bringing this magical tale to the big screen this winter and Traveler's Tales is bringing it to your console.
The plot of the game mirrors that of the film, which in turn is based on the book. The four Pevensie children arrive in Narnia in the midst of a hundred year winter. Their journey leads them to meet with all sorts of fantastic characters while they see what they can do to defeat the evil White Witch and break the spell of never-ending and bring spring at last back to Narnia.
The principal characters from the film all lend their voice talents to the game, not only helping to bridge the gap between game and movie, but also add some rich character and excellent acting skills to the final product. In addition, over 30 minutes of movie footage will be used to help tell the story in between the 15 interactive story-based adventures.
You play the game as the four central characters of the story, the four children. Each of these children has their own skills and abilities, allowing you to select a specific child you feel would be ideal for a situation. You can switch children as often as you want, but certain levels will limit what children are with you due to storyline reasons. Two players can play together in a co-operative mode and this can be useful since teaming up the children can give even more special abilities.
For instance, teaming up Peter with either the young Edmond or Lucy will allow Peter to swing the smaller child through certain areas not other wise reachable. Peter can also carry Susan, the older girl, on his back, allowing her to throw objects, such as snow balls, at the collection baddies.
Each child has their own individual strengths, as well. Peter, being the oldest male child, is the strongest. He can dispatch foes in the shortest time as well as break through certain barriers, like locked doors or a thicket or brambles. Edward is nimble and can climb like a squirrel! Everything from flag poles to tree trunks, he'll scamper on up. Edward, like Lucy, is very young and small and thus they can use their diminutive size and weight to reach areas the older children cannot. Susan has great aim and can throw projectiles with deadly precision.
Along the way, players will discover hidden items, such as coins, which will enable them to unlock new abilities for the four Pevensie children. This encourages gamers to explore every nook and hollow they come across, for you never know what you might find…
The game also promises dynamic difficulty settings. While you have the option of specifying different levels of difficulty, the game will adapt to the player's performance and adjust the difficulty and allocate additional health if necessary. This not only prevents the game from becoming needlessly frustrating, but also will help to make the game more accessible to a younger audience who may have trouble with the initial difficulty.
The journey to break the White Witch's spell will not be easy for the four children, however. In their way stand many different enemies including some very unique and colorfully named creatures like the Ankleslicers, Boggles, and Minoboars!
"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" will not only deliver a great story, it's a classic tale for a reason, but combined with puzzle solving and action promises to deliver a fun time for the whole family. With co-operative play, a parent can play with their child or the kids can play together or the parents can send the kids to bed early and have all the fun to themselves. When it hits stores mid-November, gamers will finally be able to enter the wardrobe and discover for themselves the magical world of Narnia.
