I’m not really big on the trend of games based on movies, especially when the game is released before the movie. Usually the game never measures up and is just a great way for corporations to make more money off an anticipated movie release.

However, Tim Burton’s Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie’s Revenge is a great complement to the original movie and quite fun to play. You don’t have to be a fan of the gothic/horror genre or the movie itself to enjoy it. The game begins some time after the original movie and the wicked Oogie Boogie is gone. Unfortunately for Halloweentown, those pesky kids, Lock, Shock, and Barrell have managed to stitch Oogie back together and unleash him on the unsuspecting town. Fortunately, for the town, Jack Skellington, aka “The Pumpkin King”, is back and ready to save the day.

The games mixes some basic combat with mission based play that helps give you action while also piecing together the story. The action is solid and varied. Jack has the opportunity to use a cool weapon called the soul grabber which has a couple of unique different functions. Jack can also pick up some new outfits along the way and this also offers various different attacks against the bad guys. The game also provides you the opportunity to create a super-powered Jack when you most need it but I will leave it at that as I don’t want to be a spoiler.

The graphics and sound of the game are both quite excellent. The developers did a great job of firming up the detailing environments and complement the movie quite well. Additionally, many of the characters are back and again appear to be done with careful precision and aren’t missing a thing. The sound was also pretty exceptional as the developers were able to get some the key voices from the movie and use them for the game. The game also provides some of the same classic movie music that the film did.

I really did enjoy the game and not because I’m a fan of the movie. I think the game displays the same creativity that the movie did and the story keeps you interested and wanting to finish. I would recommend this game to any fan of the movie and to anyone wanting to play something a bit different over the holiday season.
