Ever hear of a game called Ico? Well, don’t feel bad if you said no, because for a while, neither had I. After doing some looking around on the internet and watching some TV (G4), I had begun to see and hear a lot about it. The look of the game was great, and the gameplay just looked all-around fun. Apparently, it was a good game, but never got much publicity. Recently, Shadow of the Colossus, a game made by the same folks who did Ico, was released. Word quickly spread, and Shadow of the Colossus was apparently a hit. After hearing countless talk about it, it came to the point I had to buy it, and soon enough I did … and discovered a game that has very quickly made it to the top of my “favorite games list”.
Here’s the story. You play as … well, his name is never really given … Your girlfriend has died, and you are desperate to get her back. You are told that there is an ancient land, housing colossal creatures that, if defeated, hold a power that can bring the dead back to life. No Name quickly makes his way to this place, along with his horse, Agro, and his girlfriend (dead). You then set out across the land, defeating these enormous creatures who roam the lands … and that’s the story. Doesn’t seem like much … but that doesn’t take away from the game itself, which is quite possibly one of the most enjoyable games I have played in a long time.
How’s the Gameplay?
I’ll say it again … yeah … the game rocks! As you travel through this vast expanse of land, you (if you know your way around) will run into one of these 16 Colossi. How do you find your way around? Well, its quite easy. By pressing the circle button, No Name will hold up his sword. The sword will then reflect the light of the sun into the direction of the Colossus you are to fight. Each Colossus is different in its own way, and each has its own strategy required to beat it. With each Colossus, you must figure out how to get up onto its body. Once you do that, you must climb around, searching for the magical weak points (not sure what they’re officially called). This is very rarely an easy task. The Colossus does know you are there, and will try any thing to get you off. When you find a weak point, you must stab it with your sword, thus depleting the Colossus’ life meter.
With most Colossi, there are usually a number of Weak Points around its body, not just one, so, yeah, you have a lot of climbing to do. Now the thing that makes this game different from others is that … you don’t face anything but these Colossi. Forget little henchmen or little monsters to get in your way.
Did I say 16?!
Yes, 16 different Colossi. From big ones to small ones, short ones to tall ones…. Some simply walk, wielding giant clubs or other weapons, others fly or swim. Some resemble animals (they don’t look exactly like these animals, but when you see them, you think of the animal) such as an Elephant or Turtle. And Colossus #16 ... well, I’ll just leave you to see him yourself.
How “Expansive” are we talking?
The land you travel around this game is enormous. A lot of it is just for riding your horse in. Before every Colossus, you begin back at the temple where you left your girlfriend while you go out and hunt. There is grassland, deserts, caves, lakes, woods, all different sorts of places to travel through.
Easy to Control?
Yes, this game is fairly easy to control. To move, you use the Left Analog Stick, while the Right one moves the camera. Triangle and R1 will be your best friends in this game. Triangle is the jump button, which you usually need to use to get onto the Colossi, while R1 helps you to hold on to the Colossi you are against. When a Colossi tries to shake you off, hold on to that R1 like your life depended on it, or you’re falling … and it’s not fun to fall. When you do reach a weak point on a Colossus, you will press Square, and hold it until it is fully charged. When you get to that point, let go, No Name will shove his sword into the weak point, and you come that much closer to defeating one of these massive beasts.
How are the Graphics?
Two words … Simply Amazing. This game really brings you into the world you are playing in. The Colossi, the land, even your character are all so detailed in their own way.
Difficult? How about Immersiveness?
You could say the game is difficult, but that just makes the game more fun. Each Colossi, again, has its own strategy, and sometimes it can take quite a while to find that strategy. This usually leads to a battle being more than an hour (at least we know the game isn’t short). As for being immersive, yeah, you could say that. too I personally, couldn’t stop playing.
Will I want to play it again?
Well, if you do end up beating the game, you unlock two different gameplay modes – and many other unlockables that branch off from them – but I won’t spoil it for you.
Overall this could, in my opinion, possibly be game of the year. With its innovative gameplay, stunning graphics, and just overall fun factor, I couldn’t imagine how anyone out there wouldn’t want to check this one out. Two thumbs up, 10/10, 5/5, however you want to put it, this game is excellent to the max …. Buy it!
I like videogames FAR too much. I play them too much, spend too much money on them ... and I LOVE IT! There is no single videogame type that I don't like, and I am willing to play anything. Games are a big part of my life (and my wallet). Metal Gear Solid is by far my favorite videogame of all time, and to this day, I don't feel as if any other game can top the story, character design or atmosphere that any of the Metal Gear Solid games show us.
