The lovely Shrek and his posse, all thrown together to do battle. What could be better? I thought that this would be a one-on-one type fighting game. Honestly I thought it would be like the popular action/fighter for the GameCube, Super Smash Bros Melee, only Shrek style. It wasn't either of these.
Shrek SuperSlam is an odd idea, 1 vs 1, 2 or 3 in a bird’s-eye-view type of battlefield. There are several different ways to play. As far as single player goes, you've got Story, Mega Challenges or Melee.
Story is what you would expect; you watch a story unfold and then you become one of the characters. The story begins as several little dragons are driving Donkey and Shrek crazy. So Shrek sits down to read them a story. Just like the movies implement classic story characters such as Pinocchio and little red riding hood, so does the game. Toward the end of every story there is a conflict.
Story mode is very simple and can be completed in less than an hour.
Mega Challenges is the root of the game, the only part that holds any challenge. Basically there are 225 different challenges, within those challenges there can be up to 7 individual matches. There could either be a race or a match or some random mini-game. In Mega Challenges you can unlock other characters not available by default. You can also unlock maps. It does get tough eventually, but you have a goal - to unlock characters and maps.
Melee is a two-minute match between you and whomever you choose. You choose what map, how hard your opponent is and who they are.
Now in multiplayer you can either play Melee or King of the Hill. I didn't get an opportunity to play King of the Hill, but I imagine it's pretty fun.
Basically, the goal of the game is to slam your opponents. This is done by raising your slam bar. To raise it, you have to punch, kick or damage in any way your opponent. Whoever has the most slams at the end of the match wins.
I don't see much re-playability to the game. The combat does have different combos and variations, but in the end there isn't much there. I am glad they added destroyable structures to the maps and useable weapons that spawn. Still, it just seems like this game was thrown together way to fast.
The graphics are all right; they're close enough to the movie. The camera is annoying - sometimes it will zoom out so far the characters look like ants.
The AI of the opponents were done nicely. When you set the difficulty up they really do resemble a person playing rather than the CPU.
The game has several annoying glitches/bugs. It seemed like every ten minutes either my character or my opponents were getting stuck, not receiving commands or getting beat up because of the delay from button to screen.
I enjoyed the game for a couple hours, but soon after it lost its appeal. I can't honestly recommend this game because there isn't enough to it. Maybe if they ever make a Shrek SuperSlam 2, that would be a better bet.
I'm an RPG fan above all but I enjoy most all types of gaming. I wouldn't consider being the best RTS/Flight/Space player though. PC gaming is my passion, but I try to be fair so my PS2 doesn't get lonely.
