Smash!!! Crash!!! “Puny Humans!” Just a quick introduction to the world of Marvel’s favorite green guy, the Incredible Hulk. No game is better at getting into the body of one of our all-time greatest superheroes, and no game can put you in the mood to cause as much senseless collateral damage as The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. I was a kid in a candy store as I romped and stomped through missions and challenges as the Incredible Hulk. This is a game for all ages, and definitely one that Marvel fans will love over and over again.
The overall look of the game is spectacular. The way the Hulk moves, jumps, punches and throws will engulf all the senses of the gamer. The graphics are fabulous, showing the small clumps of rubble that break loose every place the Hulk lands. Though the people are small (remember, the Hulk is very large), they move as real people do, only not as fast when an angry thing is after them. (Sorry, shouldn’t use the word Thing - that is another game.) Buildings, cars, trucks and other cityscape landmarks are all positioned as they would be in a real city. Even the desert bases and exotic landscapes give the gamer the look and feel as if they are in an environment that is part of the living room. The movements were smooth and effortless, which made controlling the Hulk seem like I was actually in the game.
The controls of the game are extremely simple to pick up. Most of the controls are done with the left thumbstick (the right one just works the camera angle, which you really don’t need to adjust) and the four colored buttons. These buttons are used to grab, throw, attack perform special moves. All of these controls can be mastered through the small tutorials at the beginning, and in the first city episode. The trigger buttons are used to increase running speed as well as changing the targets the gamer might want to throw a bus at, but are not an essential part of getting through the early stages of a game. The controls can be used by any level gamer, and a novice might find this game an enjoyable way to break themselves in, and get the feel of the two-hand controllers of today’s consoles.
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction is an action game with an enjoyably paced storyline. Of course, you can just go around smashing your way through the city, but that can get a little redundant after awhile. There is also a storyline where you are Bruce Banner, the Hulk’s human alter ego, trying to rid yourself of this horrible beast while every military person and evildoer is out to destroy the Hulk. The storyline has fairly short cut scenes and is enjoyable to follow. What is also nice about this game, is the fact that it has little side games that test your skills as the Incredible Hulk. This is an excellent way to hone your skills for the storyline, as you become more accustomed to the controls. Some of these skill level games include putting cars on top of buildings, rescuing humans from a burning building and jumping across the rooftops of the city. Since points and high scores are kept as you do these mini-games, it is always fun to go back and see how your skills have increased. The game play is extremely creative, with many features that will lead you to waste away hours of entertainment, and not even realize where the time has gone.
What is nice about this game is that it doesn’t have a formula you have to follow every time. It gives you an opportunity to explore different levels and continue to do different things throughout the landscape it chooses. You’re not confined by the rigors of “must-move-to” journeys, and can merrily play along the way. This makes The Incredible Hul:, Ultimate Destruction a game for any person’s library. Game play never gets old, and any stressful day can be overcome with a few bouts of Hulk furry. Being able to run rampant over a series of different scenes makes this game enjoyable for any age. I found this game to be challenging, but not frustrating, which made for an enjoyable time while playing. Don’t let this game pass you by - somehow find a way to play and enjoy wreaking destruction and mayhem in your own personal living space.
