Worms Armageddon, popularly known as "Wormageddon" was originally intended as an expansion pack for Worms2. The project grew to the point where it was eventually released as a game in its own right. Worms Armageddon, like Worms 2, is a turn based game in which I find myself once again playing psychotic little worms out to destroy the enemy by any means possible. With this one I feel myself falling even more into this can of worms. The ability to devastate the enemy is increased. There are even more weapons with even more curious quirks. There's extensive training, 33 missions and a death match feature to use all those new weapons in. Many Worms lovers consider this the best game in the 2D series. I am going to start by sharing my favorite part of the game, the quirky weapons. I love the variety of weapons. I cannot get to all of the new weapons, but this is a short list of my favorites. There are new sheep. The Sheep Launcher gives me the ability to shoot out projectile sheep at unsuspecting worms. French Sheep Strike are hot. They set themselves on fire and tumble down a hill. The other new baaaad boys are Aqua Sheep - now not only can you throw the wool over your enemies eyes, you can have it come at him from the depths of the ocean. Sheep are no longer the only animal weapons in the Worms' arsenal, skunks now have joined them. Skunks release a horrible odorous cloud that infects all Worms that are around it, or upwind from it. Moles also are to be found. The Mole bomb is a digger, and at the end of the tunnel he becomes a Kamakaze. The Worms have caught on to the Kamakaze spirit - a worm can strap on a bomb and kill itself along with its enemies.
I am not very good at the missions and training. My son is far better than I am; I have never even gotten a bronze medal in the training, which is required for me to move forward to the missions - my son is much more effective in this area of the game. However, the training missions are fun. They are timed and there are a number of humorous ones. My favorites to play are Super Sheep Racing, Euthanasia and Crazy Crates. In Super Sheep I had to keep my launched sheep up in the air as long as possible. At first it can be very tricky, but it is so funny that you pick it up after a while. My sheep has to pick up as many crates as possible to extend her time. In Euthanasia you are an old-lady-killing slithering beast, allowed to use any weapon in your arsenal to relieve the suffering of as many old women as you can in the time allotted.
I have the most fun in this game in traditional play, where I play against my husband or son. I did notice that the AI on the enemy Worms seems to have improved some since Worms 2. I am not the best Worm fighter, so the AI change is noticeable to me. Fighting has not changed as much, other than the addition of a few weapons. There seem to be fewer ways to customize the play, yet still enough to keep yourself busy for a while. I have not gotten the opportunity to play online. I am aware that for those who choose to play online there are a lot of gentleman's rules that should be read prior to play.
Overall, Worms Armageddon is a great game for what it set out to do. I have fun playing it, and because it is an older game it is always priced pretty reasonably. I have a lot of fun with it, as does my family. I think the best part of the game is that I can play the game for 15 minutes in the middle of the day, try a training mission or play a short game against a family member, and after the 15-minute Worms break I can go back to what I was doing in the real world and feel refreshed from the short spurt of fun time. This is a game quality that seems hard to come by. It is well worth owning a game for a smoke break - especially when the only thing you are smoking is the enemy.
