Now before I write this review I have a confession to make. I was (still am), a huge fan of the original movie and will probably be a fan of the new one, so this may make me slightly biased towards this game. O.k. with that out of the way (and proclaiming myself to be a geek), I'll talk about the game itself.
The game takes place after the movie. One of the characters from the original movie, Alan Bradley (who was also Tron) has a son, Jet Bradley. When his dad gets into trouble, the computer program that he was working on decides to "digitize" Jet so he can enter the computer world and interact with the programs there to find out information which will lead him to his father.
While in the computer world, or grid as it is referred to, Jet is a "User" which creates a lot of confusion in the Grid as he can't be recognized as a program. He is aided in the digital world by a Byte (named Byte no less) who gives him information on what to do and where to go. He also runs into another character called Mercury, a legendary Light Cycle warrior who also helps him, as she actually believes that he is what he says he is, a User. The game spans the digital world, which includes interacting with different programs, combat and my personal favourite - Light Cycle racing.
Puzzles in this game aren't exactly going to challenge your intelligence but they do seem tricky at times. Also, the jumping you have to do at times to get to platforms have to be precise which leads to frustration so saving the game often is a must before you enter tricky sections. Combat in the game involves a lot of different weapons ranging from your disc to a sniper gun, a short-range blaster, tazer rods, etc. so there is enough to keep weapon heads happy.
The weapon you will use the most is your disc and that is where the fun is. Throwing your disc at enemies to "de-rez" them is a large part of the fun of the game. You can use the disc as a melee weapon and apply "after touch" to the disk when thrown, making it curve around corners to hit the bad guys. You can also block incoming attacks with your disc and this takes practice as you just can't hold the disc in the block position, you actually have to time it right to pull off this manoeuvre. The bad guys come in 2 flavours. There are the Intrusion Countermeasure Programs (I.C.Ps) that are trying to keep order in the world and are trying to stop the corrupted programs taking over the digital world. As you aren't recognised as a program they will hunt you down as they think you are the source of the corruption. Then there are the Z-Lots corrupted programs, which when they hit you, cause your subroutines to become corrupted.
Like most games nowadays you can upgrade your character as you go along and these are called sub routines in the game. You find the sub routines by searching bins (cubes that are see thru) and from searching the remnants of enemies you have derezzed. These include pass codes, emails and programs that allow you to jump higher, walk stealthily, more attack power etc. You place these programs into a circular interface but you can't always use them straight away. You have to defragment fragmented files, decontaminate corrupted files and port routines that are incompatible with your operating system so they become useable. This adds to the strategy of what subroutines to use at various times as you have only a certain number of slots you can place them in.
Graphically the game looks great, really capturing the look and style of the original film, from the greyish tint to the costumes with the glowing outlines on them and the world around them, creating a very stylised look that is refreshing in games The light cycles look wonderful and there is even a new one that was designed by the original designer of the ones in the film.
The light cycle part of the game is a great diversion to the shooting and platform exploring parts of the game and for people not used to the film resemble the Snake game you see on mobile phones. Instead of trying to avoid hitting the trail behind you, you also have to avoid hitting the trails of the other Light Cycles on the gaming grid as well This also is the part of the game that is multi-player online and it is a great game trying to beat people you don't know. Another online game features the discs and come in 2 varieties, Disc Tournament and Disc Arena, which are basically just variations of the same game. All you have is your disc and you have to beat other players using skill and a good aim.
The voice acting is great and features the voices of the actors from the original movie (Bruce Boxlietner, Cindy Morgan to name but two). A knowledge of the movie helps with some of the in game action but isn't vital but watch the original film anyway as it is great! All in all I recommend this game, even without the bias (I got my nephew to play it and he loved it).
