I have seen and read articles, reviews, and advertisements on the Metal Gear series over the years yet failed to ever go ahead and try even one of the games. After playing this special edition title of the Metal Gear series, I feel like the failed wonderboy quarterback, Todd Marinovich, who, after being deprived of fast food his whole life, finally encountered the gift that is McDonald’s french fries. Without getting into technical terms, this game rocks.

As in the original Metal Gear Solid 3, you of course play the role of the super cyber agent, Snake and search and battle through the jungle for a scientist and the dangerous weapon he has created. In the single player action game, you will get the opportunity to use stealth in amazingly detailed environments. You will truly feel immersed in a tropical hotbed of heart stopping danger. The game put a premium on the gamer using the stealth techniques in various areas while still allowing the gamer to kick butt against the mission’s tougher enemies.

So if this is a special edition game, what is so special that they had to add it to what was already a hugely popular game? I actually had to do some research here as I had not played the previous release. For starters, the game has added the third person camera perspective, a first for this series. You are able to rotate around the environment which is very helpful when you are trying to use stealth as you are able to carefully check the environment to ensure a successful kill and escape. A significant addition is the multiplayer online mode that lets you play several different scenarios like death match (speaks for itself), sneaking (one player sneaks to retrieve an item and everyone else must stop him), capture (timed capture the flag), team death match (again speaks for itself), and rescue (capture the flag). The game also offers a variety of extras, the most notable being the duel mode which lets you fight the significant bosses in the game with a wide variety of unique weapons.

The game play is really quite incredible. Once you master the ability to move around and use stealth to your advantage, the game becomes quite enjoyable. The storyline is well done and keeps the gamer interested and wanting to continue to play just as if you were reading a good book in which you always want to see what happens next. I found the battles to be fun and exciting. Typically you will get iced a few times before moving on but the extra combat is worth it.

The graphics are truly outstanding with some many details being added to make for an awesome environment for the story. This game sets the bar for all action games. I was impressed even with how detailed the jungle leaves were done and how they moved. I wish all developers put the time and effort into their games to go this route. The sound is also well done with solid voice acting for the characters.

This game is excellent and you should play it. If you like it and haven’t played its predecessors, then you should play those too. I feel ashamed for having waited this long to take on Metal Gear but now that I have I look forward to the next edition.
