E3 Preview - Stargate SG-1: The Alliance

May 29, 2005
by: Ophelea available on: PC
Sometimes it seems as if it's the flip of a coin as to whether a title based upon a film/tv show will succeed (more often than not, it's actually quality of the game), but science fiction as a whole has generally survived the translation. Perhaps it's the fantastical storylines, the often beautiful backdrops or, it could be that only those that are truly successful get made into games. It's been 11 years since the original Stargate movie was released; Stargate: SG-1 is now in its 9th season and has spawned a successful offshoot in Stargate: Atlantis. And, currently in production is the game Stargate SG-1: The Alliance. Convenient that it's the game I'm about to preview…

May 29, 2005
by: Fafnir available on: PC
I had a chance to sit down with Tamбs Daubner of Digital Reality and check out their new Real Time Strategy game Ghost War. Ghost War takes place in the modern day in four locations around the world. You are a member of the Elite Strategic Operations Group (SOG) and are charged with seeking out and defeating the newest generation of terrorists.

E3 Preview - The Movies

May 29, 2005
by: Felshina available on: PC
It was a cute looking booth with an interesting game title and I had an hour to kill at E3. I decided to check out the game The Movies - and I was both shocked and delighted with what I found: an original game with amazing diversity and freedom. To actually classify The Movies into any single genre would be a tough task. The game is one part tycoon, one part sim, and one part … well, I'm not sure what the last part is.

E3 Preview - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

May 29, 2005
by: Ophelea available on: PC
Harry Potter is about to enter his 6th year at Hogwarts this summer with the release of the Half-Blood Prince. This fall, we will receive the 4th installment of both the movies and the games, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. As Harry ages, so do the players of the games and in this installment, it's truly beginning to show.

E3 Preview - Handicrafts for Kids (Manualidades Para Ninos)

May 29, 2005
by: Velea Gloriana available on: PC
“Get on the computer and go do something!!” Not quite the words most parents would think of, are they? In fact, it’s usually just the opposite in my house — I’m telling my kids to get off the computer and go do something. But if the series of computer games that I previewed at E3 is translated into English, as I hope it will be, I’ll soon be telling my children to start up their computer and do something.

E3 Preview - War Front: Turning Point

May 29, 2005
by: DemiUrgoss available on: PC
War Front: Turning Point from CDV, makers of the Blitzkrieg and Codename: Panzers series, promises to be a high action RTS that will take you through an alternate history of the outcome of WWII. Forget what you know about the major battles of WWII and the turning points for the World of that period; now you have the chance to rewrite history using new experimental and secret weapons that have never before been seen by mankind. Rockets, jet planes and more will tear up the sky and the battlefield as you fight for freedom justice and the American way; or perhaps you'll fight for Stalin and vodka - it's all up to you.

E3 Preview - Sniper Elite

May 29, 2005
by: Kipeo available on: PC
By now, you're probably thinking that just about every possible World War II shooter has been made. Well, apparently, you were wrong. The folks over at Rebellion are developing a WW2 shooter that puts you in the roll of a very specialized soldier-the sniper. Sniper Elite will put the rifle in your hand and challenge you to defeat the enemy from a distance...or die trying.

E3 Preview - The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

May 28, 2005
by: Fafnir available on: PC
Early in the morning of the final day of E3, I was ushered in to a full room to be shown the latest chapter in Bethesda Softworks' now classic RPG series, Elder Scrolls. The latest chapter of this is titled Oblivion and takes place in the Empire of Tamriel. It is here as the story unfolds we find that the Emperor is dead, the throne now empty and the empire collapsing around them, demons from Oblivion (the Tamriel version of Hell) have flooded the land and are laying waste to it. It is in to this world that you find yourself thrust and here you must answer a dying emperor's wish and save the world.

E3 Preview - NHL Eastide Hockey Manager 2005

May 28, 2005
by: Lepidus available on: PC
Over the past few months, GamersInfo.net has followed the latest hockey offering from Sports Interactive closely. We were glad to see a lonely hockey-jersey clad figure hanging out in the South Hall to display the game at this year's E3 conference to show off NHL Eastside Hockey Manager 2005. Having already written a gold version preview there is not much new information, so let me summarize.

E3 Preview - Tomb Raider: Legend

May 28, 2005
by: Fafnir available on: PC
At this year's E3, fans of Lara Croft got their first glimpse at the newest chapter of the Tomb Raider series being developed for Eidos by series newcomer Crystal Dynamics. For their first foray in to the Tomb Raider series, Crystal Dynamics decided to go back to square one and completely upgrade the games graphics and physics engine. Perhaps the most radical change was giving its heroine Lara Croft a total redesign.

E3 Preview - The Saga of Ryzom

May 28, 2005
by: Fafnir available on: PC
Early on the first day of E3 I had the opportunity to head on over to Nevrax's both in the relatively quiet West Hall and check out what's coming up for Saga of Ryzom, and what can I say -- I was impressed! They had two big things to talk about; the first was their upcoming expansion Ryzom Ring and the second was the release of the 3rd chapter of the Saga of Ryzom, which is set to include the new outpost system.

E3 Preview - Imperator

May 27, 2005
by: Spygeek available on: PC
While at E3 this year, I had the opportunity to stop by the Mythic booth and see a demo of Imperator, their new MMORPG due out in the fall of 2006. Imperator is an Alternate Earth game, in which the Roman Republic continued to be the dominant culture on Earth. Roman culture may have dominated but other empires also flourished, including the Mayan Empire, Rome's biggest rival. That is, until the Mayans took off en masse in their spaceships, an act the Romans consider "The Great Betrayal". A century or so after the Mayans left, they return to Earth to settle the score, and that's where the game starts.

E3 Preview - Dark and Light

May 27, 2005
by: Felshina available on: PC
The gaming community is always looking for fresh games with innovative ideas, and Farlan Entertainment is promising just that in their upcoming game Dark and Light (DnL). Scheduled for release in November of 2005, Dark and Light promises a huge and interactive environment, an in-depth political system, an innovative crafting system, and much, much more. I had the luck of visiting the Dark and Light booth at this year's E3.

E3 Preview - Jaws Unleashed

May 27, 2005
by: Lepidus available on: PC
I was poking around the Majesco booth when I found a hidden gem. Sure, it may be hard to describe a game carrying one of the biggest movie licenses of all time as a hidden gem, but it was hidden - in that I really did not expect to find a good game, let alone have the most fun I had on the show floor. Majesco brings the 1970s horror movie franchise to consoles and the PC this year in Jaws Unleashed.

E3 Preview - F.E.A.R.

May 26, 2005
by: Ophelea available on: PC
Cinematic games are a difficult breed to pull off. Balancing gameplay with dramatic elements while still making the game compelling is difficult. It requires the best of voiceover acting, cut-scenes, music, lighting and mood. Especially mood. More often than not, the best cinematic games are built around real dramatic events, especially wars. F.E.A.R. (First Encounter Assault and Recon) by Monolith Studos, brings all these elements together in an original, frightening first person shooter.

E3 Preview - Pirates of the Burning Sea

May 26, 2005
by: Fafnir available on: PC
I got a chance to check out Pirates of the Burning Sea at ATI's booth in south hall and what can I say but wow. This game has a lot going for it with beautiful graphics, amazing audio and well, pirates! The game is based in the early 18th century in the Caribbean, with the British, French, and Spanish fighting it out for supremacy of the high seas.

E3 Preview - ECHO: Secrets of the Lost Cavern

May 26, 2005
by: Ophelea available on: PC
I've spent most of my gaming life not enjoying Adventure Games. Over the last year the genre has changed and Kheops Studios, creators of Return to Mysterious Island, have led the way. Their work has changed my mind about what I previously considered boring, static, obtuse games. Now, they are bringing us ECHO: Secrets of the Lost Cavern; yet again something new.

E3 Preview - Just Cause

May 26, 2005
by: Snapper available on: PC
In a dimly-lit, private meeting room overlooking E3's infamous South Hall, Eidos showed us its goods. Among the crowded kiosks, we discovered a friendly-looking man sitting at a modest display. His name is Christofer Sundberg and he's the co-CEO and creative director at Avalanche Studios in Stockholm, Sweden. In a lilting Swedish accent, Mr. Sundberg welcomed us and began to tell us about a gem of a game called Just Cause.

E3 2005
by: Snapper available on: PC
So I found myself between interview appointments at E3 and I was cooling my heels - quite literally - in the media lounge. The lounge is a large room partitioned to create a smaller press conference room in the back. As I was resting I heard someone poke their head out the door to the conference room and announce that a press conference was about to begin. "What the heck," I thought. "There are chairs in there, too." Sometimes being in the right place at the right time and making what seems like a trivial decision can have wonderful and completely unexpected results. This, my friends, is Fate.

E3 Preview - Hero's Journey

May 24, 2005
by: Ophelea available on: PC
After being inundated with MMOs year after year, it's become difficult to find originality - at least for me. I don't require it to enjoy a game, but to find it is a surprise. I never expected in my one empty hour on the last day of E3 to have a friend take me clear to the back of Kentia Hall (the "smallish" exhibitors hall) to a room with two people, 3 machines and a box of donuts…and here I would find what would be one of the rare gems of originality that I saw at the show.

E3 Preview - Age of Empires III

May 24, 2005
by: Kipeo available on: PC
It has been a fact of late that First Person Shooters have been the genre that has really pushed the boundaries for graphics that a modern PC can display. Most people have heard of the "Quake Engine" or the "Unreal Engine" or the "Doom Engine", and that's a testament to the fact that these FPS titles have greatly succeeded in setting the bar for graphics at a very high level. Well, the folks at Ensemble Studios have had enough of this and, thankfully for RTS fans, are looking to set a new benchmark for graphics with their third installment in the Age of Empires series.

E3 Preview - Blitzkrieg 2

May 24, 2005
by: DemiUrgoss available on: PC
For those of you familiar (and those not) with the Blitzkrieg series Blitzkrieg II will blow you away. Blitzkrieg 2 boasts 3 full campaigns with a total of 68 historically inspired missions covering North Africa, the Russian Front and the Pacific theater. Missions can be played in order, or you have the ability to pick and choose what missions you will play. Some missions will unlock additional reinforcements or new unit types that will be available from that point on.

E3 Preview - City of Villains

May 24, 2005
by: Felshina available on: PC
It's always nice to see a game live up to its hype, but the real treat is when a title goes above and beyond expectations. City of Villains (CoV), an upcoming title developed by Cryptic Studios, is just such a game. Jack "Statesman" Emmert had three goals while developing City of Villains. He wanted to:
  • Make sure people could play super villains.
  • Make sure PvP was awesome.
  • Make base building as cool as costume creation.
  • While City of Villains won't be in beta until July, from what I saw of the game, Emmert has certainly achieved all of these goals.

    E3 Preview - Diplomacy

    by: DemiUrgoss available on: PC
I met with Paradox Interactive's exceptionally beautiful Marketing Manager S. Meza today to talk about their up and coming software titles. Paradox Interactive is a small gaming company based in Sweden with really BIG games, they are the people who brought us titles like Hearts of Iron 2 and Knights of Honor and they have new offerings for us that I think you will like.

E3 Preview - Nibiru: Messenger of the Gods

    May 23, 2005
    by: Ophelea available on: PC
What happened to the Mayan civilization? Did they all die from a virus brought by profiteers? Were they assimilated into the Mexican culture? Did they migrate to places unknown and hide there still? Or, could there have been an alien conspiracy that we simply haven't discovered? Nibiru: Messenger of the Gods works to answer this last question.
